No sweet song: CD-scam Wife spots car
allegations lead to arrest for theft arrest
Shelton area resident John
Elmer Malick, 44, of 111 East
Skookum Drive, faces possible
criminal charges in connection
with the alleged theft of $22,180
in recorded music.
The investigation involves a
book about Frank Sinatra and
compact discs allegedly sold to
two Shelton stores that sell used
recordings.
Deputy William Adam of the
Mason County Sheriffs Office
took charge of the investigation at
the request of Jim Vach, a U.S.
Postal Service inspector. Adam
said Vach asked the local authori-
ties to look into the matter be-
cause the U.S. attorney won't
prosecute cases involving less
than $30,000.
Vach turned over 221 applica-
tions made to BMG Music Com-
pany as part of an offer of nine
"free" CDs to customers who
agreed to purchase several more.
"The suspect sent applications in,
received numerous CDs in the
mail and did not pay for the ship-
ping or any minor charges that
came with the 'free CDs,' " Adam
wrote in his statement of prob-
able cause.
Adam said he went to Malick's
house on September 7 and was
told by the defendant that he was
late on the payments and the CDs
were "kind of on loan."
Adam then talked to Grace
Kent at Discount Disc, 1428
Olympic Highway South, Shelton.
He said that she said she had met
Malick at another location and
had paid $20 for four CDs he said
he'd gotten from a man in Olym-
pia. She said she reported Malick
to BMG Music and that she
thought he also sold CDs to
another store in Shelton.
The CDs in question include
recent recordings of music by the
late great composers Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart and Franz Peter
Schubert, the soundtrack to the
move Schindler's List and The
Best of Sister Sledge, Three Dog
Night's Greatest Hits, Blues
Brothers 2000 and records by
Paula Cole and Emerson, Lake
and Palmer.
Malick was identified Friday in
Mason County Superior Court in
an investigation of theft in the
first degree.
Judge Toni Sheldon appointed
Charles Lane to be his defense at-
torney and found probable cause
for his arrest. She released him
on personal recognizance pending
arraignment on September 30.
Superior court roundup:
Bail set at $25,000 in
domestic violence case
A Shelton man faces potential
charges of felony harassment and
assault in the wake of a domestic-
violence incident last week.
Steven Lloyd Vangilder, 40,
of 461 East Day Springs Road,
Shelton, was identified in Mason
County Superior Court on
Wednesday, September 15, on po-
tential charges of two counts of
felony harassment and two
counts of assault in fourth degree
in connection with allegations of
domestic violence.
Judge Sheldon appointed Lane
to be his attorney and found prob-
able cause for his arrest. She set
bail at $25,000 pending arraign-
ment on September 23.
"There is a concern regarding
the safety of the community,"
Sheldon said.
ON THURSDAY, during the
motion calendar in superior court:
• Chuck Thomas Shonkwil-
er, 45, of 3700 Johns Prairie
Road, Shelton, was ordered to pay
restitution of $414.05 to Firemed-
ic Service and Mason General
Hospital. He was convicted last
year of burglary and assault in
the second degree.
IN MONDAY'S superior court
proceedings:
• Clifford Andrew Housden,
36, of 30 NE Madrona Avenue,
Tahuya, was identified in an in-
vestigation of domestic violence.
Judge Sheldon appointed Lane to
be his defense attorney and found
probable cause for his arrest for
felony harassment and unlawful
imprisonment. She set bail at
$25,000 pending arraignment on
September 30.
• Daniel F. Boone, 38, of 431
North Schooner Loop, Belfair, ad-
mitted to violating the conditions
of his probation by not serving
four days of jail time. Judge Shel-
don ordered him to serve the four
days plus 60 more for the viola-
tion. He was originally convicted
of a 1997 drug-possession charge.
Countywide burn
ban still in effect
A ban on outdoor burning, ex-
cept in designated fireplaces in
state and federal campgrounds, is
in effect on Mason County. Condi-
tions remain dry and the fire
danger is high. Fires in burn bar-
rels are prohibited as well, says
the county fire marshal.

An Allyn man faces a possible
criminal charge after a county
worker reported that his 1989
Ford had been stolen from the
parking lot at the Mason County
Shop.
Richard Ryan Rehe, 30, of 721
East Lakeland Drive, was identi-
fied Tuesday in Mason County
Superior Court in an investiga-
tion of taking a motor vehicle
without the owner's permission.
Judge James Sawyer found
probable cause for his arrest and
appointed Ronald Sergi to be his
defense attorney. Rehe was re-
leased on personal recognizance
pending arraignment.
Dale Fassio reported the car
stolen about 4 p.m. on Monday.
After giving deputies of the Ma-
son County Sheriffs Office a
statement, he called his wife,
Sandra, and asked her to come
pick him up, according to a state-
ment prepared by Undersheriff
Gary Crane.
While Mrs. Fassio was on her
way to pick her husband up she
spotted the car outside the Belfair
Pawn Shop. She used her cellular
phone to call 911 for police assis-
tance while keeping an eye on the
car and the person inside it, ac-
cording to Crane.
"Prior to the deputies' arrival
at the location of the car, the Bel-
fair Pawn Shop, the suspect fled
on tbot," Crane wrote.
Deputies talked to a person
working in the pawn shop and
were told the suspect had just
pawned an item there. The shop-
keeper identified the suspect as
Richard Rehe. He was arrested by
deputies after a brief search of
the area.
Sawyer scheduled arraignment
for October 21. The arraignment
was put off until next month so
that Rehe can undergo surgery
for a medical condition.
