Coac.h U featured
in lifting magazine
Longtime Climber weightlift-
ing guru Rich Unterseher has
been featured in a national trade
magazine in recognition of his
outstanding contributions as a
high-school coach and mentor.
BFS, the publication of nation-
al strength and weight-training
equipment mega-retailer Bigger,
Faster Stronger out of Salt Lake
City, featured "Coach U" in a
story written by Shelton's own
Bill Hicks, SHS athletic director.
Four pages long and complete
with photos, it ran in the 1999-
200 catalog edition now in circu-
lation.
It includes testimonials from
a number of Climber luminaries
past and present, among them
now-Washington-State-Universi-
ty hammer-throwing star Andrea
Thornton.
"He is one of the most inspira-
tional people in the world," said
the Climber grad. "I know that if
it were not for Coach I would not
be where I am today."
Still inspiring young men and
women to this day in his huge
weightroom domicile in the Mini-
dome, Unterseher took his most
recent print celebrity to heart
when a copy of the widely circu-
lated edition arrived in the mail.
"This means so much to me,"
he said. "I just can hardly believe
it happened. And what's really
neat is it wasn't because I've won
a big title or a state championship
or something like that. It's just
because of the program and what
it's doing to help people's lives.
"And I'm really thankful to see
that recognized, because that's
what's really worthwhile..."
Unterseher, or "Coach U," as
he's known, is in his 17th year
as weightlifting instructor and
powerlifting coach at SHS.

Volleyball Climbers
gaining momentum
The Climber spike gals sand-
wiched a rousing tournament
performance between a pair of
cruise-control wins the past week.
They thumped an uncharacter-
istically weak Tumwater 15-3, 15-
2 and 15-4 there Thursday. Sat-
urday, in an eight-team tourna-
ment at North Thurston, they re-
bounded from an opening loss to
the hosts to beat Mt. Vernon,
Timberline and Mt. Tahoma and
give highly touted Capital a real
run for its money and copped
third place overall. And then
Tuesday they thumped on anoth-
er overmatched opponent, non-
league host Steilacoom, en route
to a 15-5, 15-4 and 15-2 cakewalk.
Their jayvee and C-squad
counterparts matched them win
for win, with the exception of the
latter team at Steilacoom, which
fielded only varsity and jayvee.
Statistical leaders for the
Climber varsity that night includ-
ed Liz de Waal Malefyt (eight
kills, two blocks), Ashley Mac-
William (four kills and 14-17 ser-
ving with four aces), Kadie Hunt-
er (7-8 serving with five aces),
Rachel Beck (ten assists), Saori
Hattori (seven assists), Kaytie
Maestas (three blocks) and Lissa
James (eight digs).
Senior de Wall Malefyt earned
special recognition Saturday,
drawing one of just six berths on
the all-tournament team.
"I felt really good about the
way the whole team played," said
Climber coach Steve Beck. "It was
really fun. We played some of the
best defense, I think, that I've
ever seen Shelton play."

The Climber chlorine girls gave
visiting River Ridge all it could
handle last week before bowing
84-99.
The hosts got triumphs from
ninth-grader Kristina Saeger
(diving) and Swiss exchange stu-
dent Katrin Ebersold (50 and 100
free) in individual events and
from the foursome of ninth-grader
Hattie Wallace, junior Marie
Keyzers, ninth-grader Katie Mc-
Elliott and sophomore Lindsay
Tozier in the sprint relay.
Junior veterans Jonelle Kas-
perski and Samantha McDowell
also had productive outings for
the hosts, the former scoring sec-
ond-place points in the IM and
back and the latter finishing sec-
ond in the 200 free and third in
the fly.
