Newby helps out
when destroyer
visits Thailand
A Shelton enlisted man was
part of a crew that lent a helping
hand to a local clinic when the
guided-missile destroyer USS
Benfold made a stop at Pattaya
Beach, Thailand.
U.S. Navy Petty Officer First
Class David L. Newby and fellow
sailors spent a day of their liberty
painting the walls of a local clinic
and distributing supplies to more
than 6,000 disadvantaged resi-
dents of Thailand as part of a
community-relations project.
The destroyer is one of the
most powerful warships ever put
to sea, according to the Fleet
Home Town News Center. A com-
puter-based weapons system that
enables the crew to detect, track
and fire on more than 100 targets
at a time is the heart of the ship's
war-fighting capability.
Newby is the son of Emma
Henning of 667 Dearborn, Shel-
ton. A 1985 graduate of Shelton
High School, he joined the Navy
in June of 1985.
Teresa Gardner
graduates from
reserve training
Teresa M. Gardner has gradu-
ated from the U.S. Army Reserve
Officer Training Corps (ROTC)
Advanced Camp at Fort Lewis,
near Tacoma.
Gardner, currently a student
at Gonzaga University in Spo-
kane, graduated from Shelton
High School in 1996.
She is the daughter of Mary T.
and Donald R. Gardner of Walker
Park Road in Shelton.
At the camp session, Gardner
and other cadets between their
third and fourth years of college
completed a five-week course of
intensive military leadership
training and evaluation exercises.
Their subjects included communi-
cations, management and sur-
vival training.
After successfully completing
advanced camp and graduating
from Gonzaga, Gardner will be
commissioned as a second lieu-
tenant to serve in the U.S. Army,
the National Guard, or reserve
forces.

Newby helps out
when destroyer
visits Thailand
A Shelton enlisted man was
part of a crew that lent a helping
hand to a local clinic when the
guided-missile destroyer USS
Benfold made a stop at Pattaya
Beach, Thailand.
U.S. Navy Petty Officer First
Class David L. Newby and fellow
sailors spent a day of their liberty
painting the walls of a local clinic
and distributing supplies to more
than 6,000 disadvantaged resi-
dents of Thailand as part of a
community-relations project.
The destroyer is one of the
most powerful warships ever put
to sea, according to the Fleet
Home Town News Center. A com-
puter-based weapons system that
enables the crew to detect, track
and fire on more than 100 targets
at a time is the heart of the ship's
war-fighting capability.
Newby is the son of Emma
Henning of 667 Dearborn, Shel-
ton. A 1985 graduate of Shelton
High School, he joined the Navy
in June of 1985.
Teresa Gardner
graduates from
reserve training
Teresa M. Gardner has gradu-
ated from the U.S. Army Reserve
Officer Training Corps (ROTC)
Advanced Camp at Fort Lewis,
near Tacoma.
Gardner, currently a student
at Gonzaga University in Spo-
kane, graduated from Shelton
High School in 1996.
She is the daughter of Mary T.
and Donald R. Gardner of Walker
Park Road in Shelton.
At the camp session, Gardner
and other cadets between their
third and fourth years of college
completed a five-week course of
intensive military leadership
training and evaluation exercises.
Their subjects included communi-
cations, management and sur-
vival training.
After successfully completing
advanced camp and graduating
from Gonzaga, Gardner will be
commissioned as a second lieu-
tenant to serve in the U.S. Army,
the National Guard, or reserve
forces.
