He was told 338 of the signatures which had been presented the previous week had been certified to the county auditor. The 338 signatures would not be a sufficent amount to get the issue on the ballot, Rolf said, and asked if he could present additional signatures. City Attorney B. Franklin Heuston advised him that he should wait until he is notified by the city clerk or county auditor that the number of names is not sufficient. He would then have 10 days to submit additional signatures. We give advice, but we do not inspire conduct. -La Rochefoucauld Simpson Logging Bruce B. Coombs For Names Up An improved county assessment ratio for the coming year was announced this week by County Assessor Willis Burnett. Burnett said he had been notified by the State Department of R~venue that the assessment ratio for the county for 1971 tax collections would be 37.7. This is considerably higher than the ratio for this year's taxes. In order to compare the two, it is necessary to double the 13.6 ratio from last year. The adjustment is needed because of the change from a 25 per cent to a 50 per cent assessment level. Comparatively, the assessment ratio for this year would have been 27.2 using the same basis as the 37.7 figure for the coming year's taxes. The increase in assessment ratio will be especially beneficial to schools which saw a decrease ill the amount of state apportionment money they received because of the low assessment ratio last year. The State Department of Public Instruction figures local tax support on the basis of the dollar amount which would be collected on a 50 per cent assessment as determined by the State Department of Revenue. Assessment ratios in the state ranged from 47.4 per cent in Skamania County to 26.2 per cent in Whitman County. Burnett said the improvement in the county assessment ratio is due largely to a state program under which county assessor's offices were allocated additional funds to hire more help to speed up evaluations. Mason County participated in the program last year, and, was recently informed that it had been allocated $36,840 for the coming year. Burnett has submitted a supplemental budget for the coming year under which three field deputies and three office deputies are being hired using the state funds.
