' Savory, spicy treats. at Crazy SWeets ‘
By Kirk Boxleitner

Brissa Ruiz knows she’s putting herself
out there during a risky time for any busi-
ness, but she believes enough in the treats
she’s offering at Crazy Sweets.
The recently opened dessert shop is on
West Cota Street in downtown Shelton,
that she wants to share a zesty part of her
culture and personality. '
Ruiz’s parents came from Mexico, and
she was raised in Mexico and Lostngeles,
learning how to prepare snacks from her
parents’ home country starting when she
was 16 years old.
“The Mexican market has all types of
snacks, but they don’t decorate their foods
like I do,” said Ruiz, who has honed her
culinary skills over the past four years of
living in Washington. “I try to make ev-
erything look pretty, and not just'basic, so
that when people see it, they’ll say ‘What
is that?’ ”
Ruiz, 20 years old, was treating her
husband, who’s from El Salvador, to some
of her distinct sweets and other noshing
items when he encouraged her to turn it
into a business.

“Phantom of the Paradise.”
Kudos to the Skyline
for choosing such perfectly
matched films. Both “Rocky
Horror” and “Phantom” are
self-parodying horror-mu-
sicals from the mid-19703,
but what’s notable about
1974’s “Phantom” is that it
was released a year earlier
than 1975’s “Rocky Horror,”

of the Opera,” except that De Palma,
who was only about a decade distant
from his days as a film school student
in the 1960s, insisted on throwing ev-
ery other reference he could into the
mix, from Oscar Wilde’s “The Picture
of Dorian Gray” and Goethe’s “Faust”
to Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Cask of
Amontillado.”
A lot of my fellow film fans deeply
dislike De Palma as a filmmaker, and
a number of their complaintsare not
wrong, but I’ve always had an affec-
tion for the Alfred Hitchcock fanboy
who was part of the same wave of
“New Hollywood” filmmakers as
California kids Steven Spielberg and
George Lucas, and fellow New York
paisans Francis Ford Coppola and
Martin Scorsese.
By the 19803, De Palma had large-
ly settled into two gears, paying trib-
ute to either Hitchcock’s psychologi-
cal suspense thrillers, with neo-noir
erotica like 1984’s “Body Double,” or
Howard Hawks’ hard-bitten gangster
melodramas, as with his 1983 remake
of Hawks’ 1932 “Scarface,” but which-
ever end of the spectrum he played, it
wasall produced withan MTV music
video sheen. '
De Palma developed that polish
from refining the flair for rock operas
that animated “Phantom of the Para-
dise” so effervescently that his 1976
Stephen King adaptation “Carrie”
comes across as a portrait of staid
restraint by Comparison, in spite of
