The state’s Salmon Recovery Funding Board awarded $18 million in grants to organizations around the state to repair rivers, remove barriers blocking fish passage and replant riverbanks in an effort to recover salmon from the brink of extinction. The South Puget Sound Enhance- ment Group will use $266,050 to remove blackberry bushes and reed canary grass thickets and plant na— tive trees and shrubs on Skookum Creek off of state Route 108. The state grants, awarded annually, went to 91 projects in 29 of the state’s 39 counties. The funding board also approved Puget Sound projects totaling $38 million to be funded from the Puget Sound Ac- quisition and Restoration Fund, which awaits legis- lative approval next year, the state Recreation and Conservation Office announced in a news release.
