SHELTON'S MIKE PAVEL wasn't the most popular man on the field Friday
night with R.A. Long's offensive team Friday night. As these four pictures
show, Pavel (81) was in the Lumberjacks' backfield almost as often as its
ballcarriers.
Shelton's gridders whomped
on another opponent Friday
night, but they had to stage
another second half comeback
to beat the R.A. Long Lumber-
jacks in Longview, 21-9.
The Highclimbers were
down 9-6 at the end of the first
half before they started dom-
inating the action. They scored
two touchdowns and a safety in
the second half while holding
the hosts scoreless to nab their
third nonleague win of the 1975
campaign.
Sheiton won its 13th game in
a row and starts to defend its
Black Hills League champion-
ship against Capital High
School in Olympia Friday night.
R. A. Long marched from its
own 39 into the Shelton
endzone the second time it'got
the ball. The Lumberjacks had
received the opening kickoff
and punted to the Climbers,
who couldn't get an offensive
drive going, either.
That drive was a time-
consuming 15-play job that
extended from early in the first
period to early in the second
quarter.
Only two of the gains in the
drive were over six yards as the
Lumberjacks used a grind-it-out
running game against the
Climbers' tough defense.
The Lumberjacks' td came
on a one-yard run on the second
play of the second period. The
kick was good, and the
defending state AA champs
'were down 7-0.
The R. A. Long players were
psyched after scoring on the
vaunted Climber D, but the
next play took some of the
starch out of them.
Little Joe Schab, 140 pounds
of jet engines, took the RAL
kickoff deep in his own territory
and sped through the Lumber-
jacks' defense for a touchdown.
A couple of nice blocks sprang
the youngster loose on his way
up the right sideline, and once
he got past the defenders, they
couldn't catch him. His 4.6 time
in the 40 is the fastest clocking
for a Shelton player in modern
history.
Jim Kieburtz's extra point
attempt was wide, and Shelton
trailed 7-6.
The Lumberjacks got the
kickoff and immediately began
to move the ball on another
drive. They started from their
32 and earned two first downs
before defensive halfback

rushing yardage after two
games, who had blood
poisoning in an arm; Dan
Fitchitt, a junior who started at
both tight end and defensive
end, who was sick in bed all
week; and senior Matt Wilson,
the Climbers' starting guard,
who was out with a sprained
ankle.
The Climbers went to work
almost immediately in the third
quarter to get some points on
the board.
On the fifth play of the
quarter, Shelton's Chris McGee
threw an interception that an
RAL back caught at his own one
yard line.
But just as Shelton's goal
line stand had resulted in points
lost, the interception did, too.
Wayne ..Devaney, Shelton
defensive tackle, caught a
Lumberjack runner in his own
endzone on second down and it
was a 9-8 ballgame.
When R. A. Long kicked off
to the Climbrs after the safety,
Shelton marched 40 yards for
a score in 11 plays to take a lead
it never lost. The free kick, from
the 20, went out of bounds and
was returned to the RAL 40.
