Courthouse evacuated after bomb threat
By EMILY HANSON
emily@masoncounty.com
The Mason County Courthouse was evac-
uated earlier"~lais week due to a phoned-in
threat.
At approximately 1:20 p.m. on Monday,
the courthouse received an annoymous call
stating there was a bomb on the roof.
"Central dispatch received a vague com-
plaint of a bomb on the roof of the court-
house," Shelton Police Department Sgt.
Mike Fiola said.
The building was evacuated immediately
so that police officers and sheriffs deputies
could search the roof. Nothing suspicious
was found on the roof, nor in the building
after a cursory search.
"The caller was specific that it was on the
roof," Fiola said.
He said threats such as this one arerare
for the courthouse.
"In the nine months I've been on day
shift, this is the first one we've received," Fi-
ola said. "We're pretty confident the court-
house is safe."
The front entrance to the building has its
own security checkpoint, through which all
people must walk through a metal detector
and have bags searched.
Fiola said the Thurston County Court-
house received a similar threat around the
same time on Monday.
"We haven't traced the call yet but that's
in the works," he said.
Shelton man, 59, found dead after going missing
By NATALIE JOHNSON
natalie@masoncounty.corn
A man reported miss-
ing Friday was found dead
half a mile from his home
between 10:30 a.m. and 11
a.m. yesterday.
William Wright, 59, who
was diagnosed with severe
Parkinson's disease and
chronic depressmn, left the
home he shared with his
girlfriend, without taking
his medication with him,
sometime between 10 p.m.
Thursday and 6 a.m. Fri-
day.
On Friday morning,
Wright's girlfriend called
the Mason County Sheriffs
Office to report him missing.
She told deputies that
Wright took a handgun or
other firearm, and left on
foot, as the couple's cars
were both accounted for.
The sheriffs office con-
ducted a search and rescue
mission in the area around
Wright's residence, using
ground searchers, aircraft
and K-9 units, but yielded
no results.
Mason County Coroner
Wes Stockwell identified a
male body found half a mile
from Wright's home as the
missing man yesterday af-
ternoon.
An autopsy is scheduled
for this week. Cause and
time of death have not yet
been determined.
Man sentenced to 19.5 months for arson
By EMILY HANSON
emily@masoncounty,com
The Shelton man who pled guilty to at-
tempted arson last week was sentenced
earlier this week.
On Monday, Jason Falter, 34, was sen-
tenced to 19.5 months with 18 months of
community custody to follow.
In a statement to the court. Falter said
he is confident he can take care of himself.
"I feel horrible about what has hap-
pened," Falter said. "I just have to deal
with the crime I've committed."
On July 7, Falter attempted to set his
rental home -- located at 36 W. Wivell
Road, Shelton -- on fire by putting fire-
works, wood debris and clothing items
into the oven and setting it to 550 degrees
Fahrenheit, it's highest setting.
Before attempting to set fire, Falter
broke out the windows of the house, busted
holes in the walls and threw knives at the
walls.
Falter was diagnosed with bi-polar dis-
order 1 when he was in his early 20s. On
July 6, he attempted to check himself into
Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia
but was sent home after an evaluation.
Mason County Superior Court Judge
Toni Sheldon advised Falter to treat his bi-
polar disorder with medications prescribed
by his doctor, rather than "self-medicate"
with drugs and alcohol.
"That doesn't work for you, it just puts
you in a spiral," Sheldon said.
The court will schedule a restitution
hearing at a later day.
Mason County Sheriffs Office deputies
arrived at Falter's home after a structure
fire was reported at 5:14 a.m. July 7. How-
ever, an earlier disturbance call at 2:41
a.m. which stated a child might be in the
house was not responded to.
The sheriffs office recently concluded
its internal investigation into the nonre-
sponse call and is expected to release its
findings after the review process is com-
pleted soon.
