Despite head coach Mike Malpass
seeing individual improvement in
some of the Shelton girls' soccer play-
ers. the team has not improved to the
point where it is winning games yet.
"I'm sticking with the girls staying
in the same positions because I'm see-
ing individual improvement and even-
tually that'll show up for the team."
Malpass said.
While he said the team is working
hard to improve, its hard work did
not pay off last week when the Lady
Highclimbers suffered defeat at home
twice, first to Gig Harbor on Tuesday,
Sept. 20, and then to Central Kitsap
on Thursday, Sept. 22.
The team lost 7-0 to Gig Harbor,
and attempted only one shot on goal
while Gig Harbor had 28 shots on goal.
Sophomore Alyssa Dreckman and se-
nior Kelsey Halloway each played a
half as goalkeeper, making a combined
effort to save 75 percent of Gig Har-
bor's shots.
"Kelsey was varsity goalkeeper last
year and she's been fighting to get her
position back," Malpass said. "She's re-
sponding quite well."

He said that, overall, he thought the
girls played under their ability against
Gig Harbor.
"'I thought they came out slow and
continued that throughout the game,"
Malpass said. "There seems to be a bit
of disbelief among the girls [that they
can win]. They're constantly under
pressure. They fight so hard to get the
ball back and then they give up posses-
sion so easily."
Giving up possessions was a prob-
lem during the Lady Highclimbers' 5-1
loss to Central Kitsap. Shelton made
three shots on goal while Central Kit-
sap made 22. Halloway saved 17 shots.
"In this game, we had about four
players really stand out, but Katie
Dean's effort really shined and it was
a credit to our team. I don't think there
are any easy teams we'll play, but if we
play hard, we can compete and Katie
does that week in and week out."
Dean, a junior midfielder, said she
felt the team could have played bet-
ter.
"After we scored, our intensity
should've been higher," she said. "The
last 15 minutes were good, though."
She said she thought the team
picked its game up in the second half
