with the canal cooling off, the juice and flesh of
fresh oysters will be like biting into apples grown
beneath the sea. The Oyster Saloon is a great place
to enjoy them.
There are some nice views from the Hamma
Hamma bridge itself, but please be aware that it
is a narrow structure and many drivers just zip
through here, so they might be startled by folks
along the sides— hey, just trying to be a cautious
guide, for once.
BROKEN RECORD
We just finished a TrashMash! Litter Posse on
Dow Mountain, and an earlier one along the Ham-
ma Hamma Road, hauling out hundreds of pounds
of bottles, cans and assorted tourist trash.
As beautiful as George’s photo is, and as sweet
as my nostalgia paints the campgrounds and trails
of this area, I am terrified by what this past sum-
mer did to our scenic and recreational sites in Ma-
son County.
I am pale and sickened by what I’ve seen.
Forget national politics for one tiny moment,
folks. Let me ask you, do you want to see Staircase
and Lake Cushman closed every year?
Do restaurant and store owners in Union, Bel-
fair and Hoodsport want to lose thousands of cus-
tomers during the best days of summer once word
gets out that the lake is closed, and-anyone want-
ing an Olympic National Park experience must
now go north to Hurricane Ridge?
I don’t want to lose readers by becoming “the
trash guy,” ranting and complaining like a broken
record.
However, I’ve also written a book that draws at-
tention to some of our beauty, and while my read-
ers don’t appear to be the culprits for the specific
messes we’ve found, I admit I’ve helped spread the
word that Mason County has a lot 'of cool places to
explore, and I stand guilty of the charge.

* Trail: Education, enforcement needed for county crowds
'Keep Cushman open'ipetitionsigning event
People wanting to avoid another summer closure of Lake Cushman and the
Staircase entrance to
Olympic National Park can stop by Rest-A-While RV Park on US. Highway 101
north of Hoodsport
between 11 am. and 4:30 pm. on Oct. 10.
Author and “On the Trail” columnist Mark Woytowich will be launching a
petition drive to rally all
those interested in making sure recreation remains a viable and sustainable
business for Mason County.
Renowned Hood Canal photographer George Stenberg will also be there to sign
and sell his newly
released 2021 Hood Canal calendars.
Stenberg will hold a drawing at the end of the day for a large print of his
“Hamma Hamma’Autumn,”
featuring fall colors reflecting under the Hamma Hamma bridge. All who
stop by will be eligible for the
drawing.
“George has a way of making Hood Canal always look beautiful,”
Woytowich said, “and I’m hoping
enough people will get involved to make sure it stays that way.” '
Woytowich can be reached by email at eyefive@hctc.com.

crowds. To balance crowds, we need education,
enforcement and cooperation ambng the U.S. For-
est Service, Department of Natural Resources, and
local residents and merchants — especially mer-
chants.
Bring your ideas, your passion, your rage and
fury, and meet me Saturday, Oct. 10 from 11 a.m.
to 4:30 pm. at Rest-a-While RV Park, on US.
Highway 101 just north of Hoodsport. I’m signing
people up for next year’s TrashMash! Litter Posse,
and also taking names and statements from those
who want to help form a group interested in ap-
proaching the powers that be in hopes of avoiding
more closures, traffic jams and overwhelming hu-
man waste next year.
George Stenberg will be there as well, selling
and signing his 2021 Hood Canal calendars. At
the end of the day he’s going to hold a drawing for
a very large (and highly collectible) print of this
week’s Hamma Hamma Bridge photo, one of his
most popular prints. ‘ v
I hope that every name in the drawing box is
also on my-‘petition in support of a unified, resi-
‘ dent-led approach to managing our recreational
resources.
It’s not so difficult. We’re not drawing blood.
Just stand up for the land you love.
