MEL MORGAN, who gained 51 yards for Shelton against Capital Friday night, scampers for good yardage with the help of teammates Tracy Ridout (63), Sam Martin (30), Chris McGee (121 and Jay Zamzow (75). I By CHARLES GAY Shelton's Highclimbers opened their 1975 Black Hills League season Friday night in Olympia by clobbering a young Capital team 22-0 for their 24th straight BHL win, a string spanning five seasons. The powerful Climbers, who grabbed their fourth win in four starts this season, took an 8-0 halftime lead and then blitzed the Cougars with two touchdowns near the end of the third quarter to ice the contest. Capital, the new high school in Olympia which has no seniors, hardly got anything going all night. The biggest gain the Cougars had was running onto the f~ld as the Climber defense held them to 89 total offensive yards for the contest. So tight was the Climber D that with six plays remaining in the lust half, Capital had a net minus 16 yards. Capital was able TIGHT END Dan Fitchitt grabs a pass good for 11 yards and a touchdown in the first quarter of Friday's game against Capital. • • to invade Shelton territory only once in the first half, near the end of the period, when the Cougars clicked on a 35-yard bomb. The closest the hosts got to the Shelton goal line in the game was 22 yards away. Shelton scored the third time it had the ball. The Climbers started the l 1-play drive on their own 25 yard line and ran 10 straight running plays to the Cougars' t I before quarterback Chris McGee tossed an 11-yard td to tight end Dan Fitchitt. Climber backs Mel Morgan, John Vernon (former starting quarterback moved to halfback) and Sam Martin pounded through the Capital defense. Morgan, back in the Climber lineup after sitting out the R. A. Long contest a week ago with blood poisoning, ran for gains of 13 and 10 yards on the drive and ended the night with 51 yards in nine carries. Morgan looked / graceful cutting through holes. Vernon, who carried the ball 12 times in a busy night, gained 21 yards on five carries in that drive and Martin added 20 yards in three tries. The touchdown throw by McGee (5-14 for 53 yards for the night) came on the fkst play of the second quarter. Jim Kieburtz's extra point kick was no good and Shelton led 64). The Climbers had plenty of chances to score additional touchdowns in the second quarter, but they didn't take advantage of Cougar mistakes. Two plays after Shelton's kickoff following the touchdown, Climber linebacker Tracy Ridout intercepted a Capital pass at the Cougar 33. The Climbers moved the ball only five yards in four plays and Capital took over on downs. Three plays after Shelton had given up the ball, the Cougars Confusing, isn't it? One advertisement says to go down the street to have your new windshield installed- the other says to go up the street. The ONLY PLACE to have a NO LEAK -- is at -- 3rd & GroVe "Where your windshield is guaranteed not to leak." tried something that looked like a double reverse with a pass and a forward pitch. It didn't work. In fact, Shelton recovered a fumble that resulted from the strange play and had the ball on the Capital 45. Shelton returned the favor four plays later, however, when Vernon fumbled and the Cougars recovered. The next time Shelton got the ball (after a punt), it drove from the Capital 46 to the 24 before McGee threw an interception to end the drive. Four plays after the interception, Capital's punter fumbled the snap at his goal line and Mark Trail jumped on him in the endzone for a safety. It was then 8-0. Shelton was given beautiful field positon again when the Capital kickoff went out of bounds and the ball was placed on the Cougar 40. Vernon fumbled again on first down, though, and Capital recovered. The Cougars then struck suddenly on first down for their only threat of the first half. The quarterback rolled left, almost ran with the ball, and lofted a long pass downfield which was caught at the Shelton 25, a 35-yard gain. Shelton held on downs and the half ended a moment later. it didn't take the Climbers long to get going in the second hall Capital received the kickoff and was driving into Shelton territory when the Climbers recovered a fumble on their own 43. The visitors then started an I I-play march that ate upa lot of time on the clock. Morgan carried five times in the drive for 23 yards. Fullback Martin bulled his way for four yards on a tough touchdown run to cap the drive. Kieburtz's kick was good to make the score 15-0. Lightning struck four plays after Shelton's kickoff. Capital's punter, who was booming nice ones all night, kicked from his own 39 after the Cougar offense sputtered and speedy Joe Schab fielded the ball. Schab sped up his right sideline and left Capital players clutching air on a breathtaking 82-yard punt return for a touchdown. Timely blocks by several teammates made it possible. The td came with 2:09 left in the third period and Kieburtz's extra point kick was the last scoring of the night. Just a week ago, Schab returned a kickoff for a touchdown. The fourth quarter wasn't the most exciting period we've ever watched, but it sure gave Shelton junior varsity players experience. The jayvees played for the entire quarter and had some nice gains once in awhile. Capital's offense continued to lack consistent punch through that fourth quarter and when it was finally over, the Climbers had their 14th straight win in a row spanning the 1974 and 1975 seasons.
