Mason County recorded 275 cases of COVID-19 last week, more than double
the previous week’s numbers.
As of Tuesday, nine people are hospitalized in Mason County and two are
hospitalized outside of Mason County. There were 399 cases reported in the
last
14 days and the rate per 100,000 has risen to 614. Friday saw the highest
case
count of the week with 97 cases.
According to Mason County Emergency Management, 50.6% of people in
the county are fully vaccinated. The state Department of Health said as of
Mon—
day, 77.1% of people in the state 12 and older have received at least one
dose of a
COVID-19 vaccine and 70.7% of people 12 and older are fully vaccinated.
Games, classes
at senior center
The Mason County Senior Activi-
ties Center hosts games, classes and
other events at the Pavilion at 190 W.
Sentry Drive in Shelton.
The activities today are cribbage
at 8:15 a.m., in-person and Zoom
yoga at 8:30 a.m., E-Z Crafters at 9
a.m., quilting at 9:30 a.m., knit and
chat, mahjong, advanced line dance
and Zoom tai chi at 10 a.m., bridge at
noon, and bingo at 1 p.m. .
The activities on Friday are crib-
bage, gentle tai chi at 8:15 a.m., line
dance at 9 a.m., Mexican train domi—
noes at 10 a.m., pinochle at noon, and
hand and foot care at 12:30 p.m.

meets Thursdays
The Mason County Genealogical
Society meets via Zoom at 7 p.m. the

Volunteers sought
for task force
The Shelton School District is
seeking volunteers to serve on a
new English Learner Task Force
that will put together recommenda-
tions on how the district can provide
instructional services and culturally
’ v enriched, welcoming environments
for students who qualify for English
Learner services pre-kindergarten
through the 12th grade.
Over the past six years, the
number of students enrolled in the
Shelton School District who have
qualified for EL services has dou-
bled. The district wants to increase
the quality and coordination of EL-
related educational .supports and
services, especially across the core,
general education settings.
The new task force begins work
this month and plans to provide
recommendations to Superinten-
dent Wyeth Jessee' by early spring.
The task force will be limited to
16 members, with one quarter of
them current students enrolled in
EL services and/or their parents/
guardians. , .
Applications are available on the
district’s website;
fundraising event Oct. 23 at The Un-
derground in Shelton.
The “Cinderella of a Certain Age”
event raises money for the nonprofit
Shelton Youth Connection and the
homeless youth program. Tickets are
$150.
The news release states “Women
over 50 tend to be overlooked, thought
of grandmotherly; old, soft in the
middle with crinkled smiles and
wrinkled hands; forgetting that they
were young. It is time that gentrifica-
tion come to an end where beauty is
concerned.”
Due to pandemic mandates, the
event is limited to 30 people. Tickets
are structured by time slots, with a
maximum of three women at a time
being made over and photographed.
Wine and cider will be served, and
gluten free and vegan hors d’oeuvres
are available.

40 et 8 offering
nursing scholarships
The 40 et Veterans Club in Shel-
ton is ofi‘ering nursing scholarships
to applicants currently in the nursing
field who want to eXpand their edu-
cation to become a registered nurse.

Nineteen students from Mason
County earned spots on the dean’s list
for winter quarter at the University of
Washington.
To qualify, a student must have
completed 12 graded credits and earn
a GPA of 3.5 or better.
