The Saints’ Pantry Food
Bank is moving across the
street after purchasing the for-
mer J.C. Penney building at
the corner of Third and Cota
streets in downtown Shelton.
The nonprofit, founded in
1981 at Saint Edwards Catho-
lic Church, paid $320,000 for
the building at 205 W. Cota
St. It is located across from the
current building at 214 S. Sec-
ond St.
The state loaned the orga-
nization $260,000 two or three
years ago, with the provision
that the money be spent with-
in five years, said Billie How-
ard, president of the group’s
board of directors. It will take
years to pay back the loan,
she said. ‘
“We’ve been waiting for a
long time,” Howard said. “We
need the room and the space.”
Clients will no longer have
to stand in rain when they line
up to receive food, Howard said.
“We’re just excited,” said Ex-
ecutive Director Rebecca Mar-
quez Boynton. “We can definite-
ly use the space.” The building
is about 6,000 square feet and
will be remodeled to make room
for the agency’s programs, such
as the backpack program for
students and their families in
need, she said.
“God has blessed us with a
new start,” she said.
The Saints’ Pantry serves
clients from 9:30 am. to noon
on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Northwest Harvest, Food Life—
line, Fred Meyer and Walmart
are among the group’s spon-
sors. Master Gardeners from
WSU Mason County Extension
grow and donate fresh produce
from its Catalyst Garden in
Shelton.
Donations are accepted be—
tween 8 and 11 am. weekdays.
