everything from oysters to shrimp to corn,
gumbo and fair scones. The proceeds from
those sales go toward local projects sup-
ported by the non-profit organizations.
The Mount Moriah Masonic Lodge
served gumbo on Saturday.
"We're down to the last of that pot. Its
going good," said volunteer Jeff VanGun-
dy.
He said the group donates $500 each
year from it's OysterFest earnings to
Head Start in Mason County.
The Hood Canal Aquanuts displayed
both live and cooked shellfish this week-
end. Each year the group brings touch
tanks to OysterFest full of sea life from
Hood Canal and the Puget Sound.
"It's one of the most popular exhibits,"
said volunteer John Tupper. "A lot of peo-
ple haven't even seen these things before."
Entrance fees alone earned Skookum
Rotary more than $50,000 Cleveland said.
"The crowds were a lot bigger. There
was a lot of participation from
the crowd."
With that money, Skookum Rotary
gives out scholarships to college students
from local high schools, supports the Ma-
son County Science Fair, gives matching
grants to local organizations and helps
fund drinking water wells and small loans
to people in Durban Bay, South Africa.
Each year OysterFest also hosts the
West Coast Oyster Shucking Champion-
ships.
"It was an average turnout for partici-
pants," said Mike Barnard, oyster shuck-
ing championship chair. "The crowds were
a lot bigger. There was a lot of participa-
tion from the crowd."
Guadalupe Leon, sponsored by Goose
Point Oys~#rs, took first place in the Speed
Shucking ~nals with a time of i minute,
22.47 seconds, and Dionisio Leon, also of
Goose Point Oysters, took first place in the
Half shell Shucking Finals with 2:37.13.
In the speed shucking competition,
shuckers only need to get the oysters out
of the shell and on a platter.
In the halfshell competition, the shuck-
ers have to carefully remove the oyster
and place it back on the shell on a bed of
rock salt.
"That one is presentation," Barnard
said. "The judges go through each oys-
ter individually, very carefully, to see if
there's any damage to the oysters."
The shucking competition, including
practice rounds, used more than 500 doz-
en oysters provided by Taylor Shellfish,
Barnard said.
