Shelton-Mason County Journal Climbers edge Lincoln in 'nail-biter' Kinne breaks single- season rushing record By EMILY HANSON en~ily@rnasoncounty.com It all came down to the last minute of the game. Before defeating Lincoln 34-28 on Friday, Shelton was tied at 28 with the Abes in the Lincoln Bowl and appeared headed toward its first overtime of the season with 1 minute left on the clock. And that's where Shelton senior defen- sive back Jake Frakes made a big play. Thurston, "We ran a 7 p.m. couple of plays and then (Jared) Welander lost his helment and had to come out," head coach Matt Hinkle said. Again, Frakes stepped up for a big play. With the clock expiring, and Frakes playing as backup quarter- back, he "lobbed" a pass to senior tight end David Ajamu in the end zone for the win with 6 seconds re- maining. Shelton senior Ralph Kinne went on to rush for 245 of the Highclimbers' total 293 yards to give him a season total of 1,684 yards. This broke former High- climber Kyle Burbridge's single- season rushing record of 1,657 yards set in 2007. "Ralph deserves it. He runs hard," Hinkle said. The game-winning reception ended a game of two very different halves for the Highclimbers. "I thought the kids played well in the first half and then we let the momentum go in the second, un- fortunately," Hinkle said. At the start of the game, the Highclimbers were focused, he said. The first quarter began with a 5-yard touchdown run from Kinne and a good PAT from senior kicker Shelby Salisbury. Lincoln tied the score with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Love to junior wide receiver Kashawn Johnson with 2:37 left in the first quarter. Shelton dominated the second quarter. Kinne scored on runs of 13 and 41 yards in the quarter. He also scored a two-point conversion. Senior running back DeShon Bell scored on a 10-yard run with 3:53 left in the second quarter, After Kinne's 41-yard TD, Salisbury scored another PAT. "We came out in the second half and made a couple of uncharacter- istic turnovers to give Lincoln the momentum, which they held for most of the second half," Hinkle said. The Abes scored on an ll-yard pass from Love to senior wide re- ceiver Joshua Eckwood 29 seconds into the third quarter and made the PAT. With 6:42 remaining in the third quarter, Welander was in- tercepted by Lincoln sophomore defensive back Dehonta Hayes on a pass intended for junior wide re- ceiver Michael Sobotka. The Abes scored on the interception and made the resulting PAT. Lincoln tied Shelton at 28 with 2:49 remaining in the game, when Love completed to Eckwood on a 1-yard touchdown pass and. the PAT sailed between the posts.
