The difference in scores between the
Shelton girls' swimming team and Wilson
last week can be attributed to at least one
thing: attitude.
On Oct. 4, Shelton outswam Wilson 101-
85.
"They should've beat us but they swam
poorly and we swam well," co-head coach
Chad Youngquist said. "The Wilson coach
asked if we ever get best times in our pool
and we got several while they got none. It's
the only time I really like our pool."
He said Wilson's fastest swimmers saw
the Shelton pool without any starting blocks
and thought they wouldn't get any best
times or qualify for the 3A Narrows League
tournament or the West Central District III
tournament.
"That handicapped them," Youngquist
said. "It's almost impossible to not think
that."
He said the Shelton swimmers know
when their opponents come in that they'll
get a bad attitude, so the Lady Climbers use
that advantage.
"Very few girls weren't right at their
best," Youngquist said.
Shelton earned best times with seven
swimmers.
Sarah Myers qualified .for the district
tournament in the 200-yard freestyle with
a best time of 2 minutes, 9.19 seconds. She
took second place in the event, 0.11 seconds
behind the first-place Wilson swimmer. My-
ers also qualified for districts in the 100-
yard freestyle, though her time of 1:00.93
was not a best time.
Julia Morris earned a best time in the
~ 200-yard freestyle at
2:35.33, which was fast
enough for fourth place.

dividual medley, Me-

Beck said the second game
was the best of the match.
"Any time you win a game
in overtime, it is fun and a good
sign of maturity, so the second
game's 26-24 win was good for
us, considering we were down
24-22 and came back to win," he
said. "A stuff block at 24-24 by
Overlin was big."
On Saturday, the Lady
Highclimbers competed at the
Bearcat Varsity Invite in Mon-
roe. In the 12-team tournament,
Shelton took second in its pool,
though by points, it was a three-
way tie for first with Kent-Mer-
idean, Garfield and Shelton.
"We got beat soundly by
Meadowdale in the first round
of tournament play and then let
our final match against Ingle-
moor get away from us in the
third game," Beck said. "We
out-played them most of the
match."
Shelton placed seventh out
of 12 teams.
"I think we surprised most
teams with our consistency, ball
control and defense," Beck said.
"It was a great day for us."
The strength of the Lady
Highclimbers (5-5) remains in
its passing ability, Beck said.
"We have to have strong ball
control as we are shorter than
most teams and lack a big domi-
nant hitter or solid blocker," he
said.
Beck said he is seeing contin-
ued development of the team's
middle attack with O'Connor,
Lugalia and sophomore right-
side hitter Heather Johnson
blocking.
The Lady Highclimbers
are scheduled to play next at
6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at home
against Timberline.
