Handicapped enjoy camp
For five years Jennie Smith
of Shelton has been associated
with Camp Easter Seal West, a
recreational camp for the
handicapped.
"There are six sessions,'
Jennie explains, "running from
June through August. The first
session is for children between
the ages of nine and 13 years.
The following ones accommodate
older persons, progressively."
Jennie, daughter of Stan and
Willa Smith of Island Lake, was
born and reared in Shelton
where she was graduated from
high school. She enrolled in
Seattle Pacific College intending
to become a physical education
teacher. She received her degree
in 1973.
For the next four years she
served at Camp Easter Seal West
as a counselor. This past summer
she was employed as a camp
nurse.
"After I finised college," she
explains, "I began thinking
therapy. Then l went into
nursing, and completed my
degree at Clark College last
spring."
During the summers of 1973
and 1974 Jennie worked as a
camp counselor at O rcas Island
in the San Juans. Since 1975 the
camp has been located at
Vaughn Bay.
"The first summer there,"
Jennie recalls, "the girl campers
lived in army tents and the guys
bunked in the recreation
building, as we had no cabins.
"Now there is a lodge, two
longhouses, a dining room, a
recreation building, a campfire
area and also outpost camping
sites. Campers can enjoy a
swimming pool heated for
therapy, a miniature golf course,
and pony cart rides. There are
various farm animals for them to
enjoy."
Handicapped persons
attending range in age from nine
to 80 years, according to Ms.
Smith, and their handicaps may
be either physical or mental.
"Many people really look
forward to camp each summer,"
Jennie declares. "Their activities
depend upon their capabilities.
"The younger people like
arts and crafts, pony rides,
boating, swimming, fishing and
camping.
"Older folks are not so much
