delivery, electricity, and road

became a lost cause due to a
lack of interest.
"One development problem
is overpowering to an incoming
officer" said Smith.
The groundwork of working
with committee members, Bette
Larson to update an address
listing of residents, and Linda
Wilson, Loretta Hedge, Bonnie
Davies and Betty J. Dimmen in
sending a newsletter to property
owners on the three lakes has
helped in understanding what has
been done, and what is to be
done, he said.
He expressed te group's
appreciation to the three boys,
Travis Allen, Craig Bliele and
Donnie Dirnrnen, for distributing
90 newsletters while on their
newspaper routes.
During the business meeting,
it was noted that the attorney
Phil Best is giving advice on
which way to go, and is not
actively involved other than
finding the problems. The next
legal step is striving to have the
planning commission adopt the
EIS for this project.
On the future business
agenda is the problem of
shooting near the homes on the
lakes. MasonCounty did restrict
shooting, but Kitsap County did
not. a firm look will be taken at
this issue regarding safety and
the population increase.
Volunteers are needed for
communications and telephones
committees. Plans are also
underway to have a bulletin
'board for noting future meetings
placed at the large "Y"
intersection near the tri-lakes.

A special freebie is a
10-month-old Norwegian
Elkhound pooch that needs a
home with room to roam. His
name is Viking, and he can no
longer stay at his navy quarters.
He is gentle with kids, has a
pawful of tricks and can be
protective when needed. To
adopt this potty-trained pet, call
479-2910 after 4 p.m.,
weekdays.
Mrs. lzetta Dean's recovery
after surgery has been slow but
sure. Good news this week is
that she has the doctor's
permission to leave the
Bremerton Convalescent Home.
She will be staying with Ken and
Dorothy Spangler, and they are
inviting the many friends of
Izetta to drop by for a visit.
Mrs. Wilma Just of Mission
Lake started off the month of
October with major surgery. She
is at Harrison Memorial Hospital,
is now out of intensive care, and
may have visitors in Room 207
West.
Flocks of seagulls have been
migrating to Mission and Tiger
lakes. With the warm sunshine,
the appearance of flying ants
may be the target as hundreds of
the birds cruise and pollute the
waters.
With the seagull in the
protective category (no worry
about their becoming an extinct
species), the only recourse to
shooing the screaming feathered
birds has to be limited to a
strong vocabulary while madly
waving the arms.
As the hunting season opens,
it seems an unlikely time to
worry about the tansy ragwort
weed. However, there are scores
of these plants having a period
of luscious growth along the
road between the turnoff at
Tiger and Mission lakes.
Why be concerned? Thurston
County has laws designating
control of the weed by property
owners. Some counties do not
have such control, plus the
known major carrier is
contaminated straw and hay
brought in by hunters.
Tansy ragwort can be
identified by the five to nine
inches long leaf, that may vary
from light to dark green, with a
frilly edging. The seedlings now
growing contain alkaloids that
can accumulate in the liver and
cause liver damage to the
livestock that finds the younger
growth palatable.
A call to Tom Davis as an
authority through his active
committee participation for
control of the highly poisonous
plant, confirmed the growth
pattern this time of year. He
noted this biannual plant blooms
the second year, then dies after
spreading seed over acres of
ground. One plant can seed four
acres, and if cut off, it will live
until completing its own cycle.
Seeds have been known to be
dormant in the ground ten to
fifteen years before conditions
change, promoting sprouts and
growth.
The herbicide spray of 2,4-D
is recommended, and when used
properly it is not as poisonous as
some people think. Actually the
solution creates rapid growth,
and causes the plant to destroy
itself. A waiting period of seven
to 14 days after spraying is
practical and should avoid a
chemical disturbance in the body
of an animal.
For those not wanting to
have a weed pulling party, the
cinnabar moth is being
distributed in Oregon and
western Washington as a
biological control agent.
