Car, papers go up in smoke
Fire destroyed newspaper deliverer C.J. Beard's
car after it rolled away from him on Lynch Road
on September 30. A Fire District 4 spokesman said
efforts to rock the car out of its predicament heat-
ed the catalytic converter, which set grass on fire,
in turn igniting the vehicle. Firefighters quelled
the blaze before it spread to the surrounding
woods, and Beard spent the rest of the day in his
other car rounding up issues of the Olympian and
the Tribune for his customers after the original
copies were destroyed.

From October 13, 1899, Mason
County Journal:"
The Chapman and Willey boys
have been running a seine in the
bay and made a haul which con-
tained several big sturgeons one
day last week. Two of the fish
weighed about 150 pounds each,
and a much larger fish got away by
tearing a big hole in the nets. The
markets served *sea-bass" to their
patrons.
Thomas Jackson, of Arcadia,
made final proof before Corer. Angle
last Friday, William Morris and Ar-
chic McKay being his witness. Pat.
Vance also made final proof for an
additional entry of a 40-acre tract
in the Skokomish valley. Mr. and
Mrs. Vance were the first settlers
in the Upper Skokomish, and have
lived on their homestead for twen-
ty-three years. The first half of
that period everything the settlers
in the valley needed was packed on
their back or the back of a cayuse.
From the October 15, 1964, Mason
County Journal:
Mson County's first "lost hunt-
er" incident of deer season this
year ended happily Tuesday morn-
ing when four boys who had spent
the night in the woods in the Camp
Govey area were found unharmed.
The boys, Eddie Crawford, Jim Grif-
fith, Roy Dunn Jr. and Ron Jonker,
had left about 4:40 p.m. Monday to
go hunting .... The boys said they
had pursued a deer at which they
had shot into the woods and it be-
came so dark they could not find
their way out.
Marcia Dorcy and Reta Carte
comprised the homecoming royal
court with Queen Cheryl Bead af-
ter being introduced to the crowd
attending Friday night's homecom-
ing game at Loop Field. To make
their shining hour complete the
.ffrid team responded with a brilliant
38-14 victory over Central Kitsap.
From the October 12, 1989, Mason
County Journal:
A search warrant served by local
law-enforcement officers on a resi-
dence in the Alderbrook develop-
ment Monday evening resulted in
the arrest of five persons for inves-
tigation of manufacture of a con-
trolled substance. Officers said the
chemicals and finished products
found in the Union residence in-
dicate it was being USed for the
manufacture a methamphetamines.
Mason County voters will cast
ballots again in the November 7
general election on a $10,050,000
bond issue for an addition to Mason
General Hospital and remodeling of
parts of the present structure. The
bond issue was approved by 68 per-
cent of the voters in the primary
election but failed to receive vali-
dation by 11 votes. The bond issue
needed a voter turnout of 40 per-
cent of those voting in the last
general election in order to be vali-
dated.

Car, papers go up in smoke
Fire destroyed newspaper deliverer C.J. Beard's
car after it rolled away from him on Lynch Road
on September 30. A Fire District 4 spokesman said
efforts to rock the car out of its predicament heat-
ed the catalytic converter, which set grass on fire,
in turn igniting the vehicle. Firefighters quelled
the blaze before it spread to the surrounding
woods, and Beard spent the rest of the day in his
other car rounding up issues of the Olympian and
the Tribune for his customers after the original
copies were destroyed.

From October 13, 1899, Mason
County Journal:"
The Chapman and Willey boys
have been running a seine in the
bay and made a haul which con-
tained several big sturgeons one
day last week. Two of the fish
weighed about 150 pounds each,
and a much larger fish got away by
tearing a big hole in the nets. The
markets served *sea-bass" to their
patrons.
Thomas Jackson, of Arcadia,
made final proof before Corer. Angle
last Friday, William Morris and Ar-
chic McKay being his witness. Pat.
Vance also made final proof for an
additional entry of a 40-acre tract
in the Skokomish valley. Mr. and
Mrs. Vance were the first settlers
in the Upper Skokomish, and have
lived on their homestead for twen-
ty-three years. The first half of
that period everything the settlers
in the valley needed was packed on
their back or the back of a cayuse.
From the October 15, 1964, Mason
County Journal:
Mson County's first "lost hunt-
er" incident of deer season this
year ended happily Tuesday morn-
ing when four boys who had spent
the night in the woods in the Camp
Govey area were found unharmed.
The boys, Eddie Crawford, Jim Grif-
fith, Roy Dunn Jr. and Ron Jonker,
had left about 4:40 p.m. Monday to
go hunting .... The boys said they
had pursued a deer at which they
had shot into the woods and it be-
came so dark they could not find
their way out.
Marcia Dorcy and Reta Carte
comprised the homecoming royal
court with Queen Cheryl Bead af-
ter being introduced to the crowd
attending Friday night's homecom-
ing game at Loop Field. To make
their shining hour complete the
.ffrid team responded with a brilliant
38-14 victory over Central Kitsap.
From the October 12, 1989, Mason
County Journal:
A search warrant served by local
law-enforcement officers on a resi-
dence in the Alderbrook develop-
ment Monday evening resulted in
the arrest of five persons for inves-
tigation of manufacture of a con-
trolled substance. Officers said the
chemicals and finished products
found in the Union residence in-
dicate it was being USed for the
manufacture a methamphetamines.
Mason County voters will cast
ballots again in the November 7
general election on a $10,050,000
bond issue for an addition to Mason
General Hospital and remodeling of
parts of the present structure. The
bond issue was approved by 68 per-
cent of the voters in the primary
election but failed to receive vali-
dation by 11 votes. The bond issue
needed a voter turnout of 40 per-
cent of those voting in the last
general election in order to be vali-
dated.
