As Fox breaks another course record:
Runners eye Pac-9 title
The Climber cross-country run- performance, finishing in 27 Kretschmar came through with a today in Kelso. Both have been
ners remained unbeaten as their
ace broke another course record
last week.
Though still coughing from the
effects of a lingering bug, state-
veteran senior Dale Fox smashed
the Centralia Tigers' course
record by a whopping 42 seconds
to pace a Climber contingent sol-
idly on course for the Pac-9
League championship with just
three weeks to go before state.
Dale clocked in at 15:52 over
the extremely hilly Centralia
Municipal Golf Course 3.0-miler.
He finished more than a minute
and a half ahead of the number-
two runner, SHS classmate Ben
White.
THE EFFORT earned the
league-leading Highclimber no
less than "Athlete of the Week"
distinction this week in the Taco-
ma News Tribune.
The Climbers' season-long #2
runner, sophomore standout Vic
Carpenter, slipped and went
down hard on a steep side hill at
about the mile marker and never
really recovered, finishing sixth
overall, another minute or so af-
ter Ben.
Sophomore Rick Goin con-
tinued to perform well despite a
nagging injury. He ran 6:03 miles
and wound up fourth overall, in
18:10.
For the girls, state-veteran ju-
nior Jamie Coughlin continued to
run well, overpowering everyone
with a 20:35 performance good for
a 6:51 per-mile pace. Senior team-
mate Stefanie Ophoven comple-
mented her with a seventh-place
minutes even.
SATURDAY the harriers trav-
eled to Lake Spanaway Park for
the Cardinal Invite and a chance
to get a feeling for the course that
they'll run at regionals in two
weeks. None of them had run the
course before, so it was an im-
portant trial for them, say coach-
es.
Fox was taking his SAT test
and missed the race, won by the
Haskins kid from Port Townsend
that he'd nipped at the wire in
the Salt Creek Invitational earli-
er in the year.
Coughlin again led through the
first 800 meters but fell back
somewhat, finishing with a 6:42
pace. And Carpenter ran 5:33
miles despite the lingering effects
of his fall three days before.
Exchange student Anke
solid showing in the girls' jayvee
race, taking seventh place overall.
ALAS, BAD NEWS followed
the Climbers' Lake Spanaway
sidetrack. Sophomore Kevin Bald-
ing learned he has a lower-leg
stress fracture and will have to
sit out the rest of the season.
"He was our #5 runner and will
be missed," says assistant coach
Mike Fox. "That duty now falls
to sophomore Tyler Thornbrue,
who has had some really good
races the last week. He is doing
well in practice and we look for
him to step up."
The good news? State-veteran
sophomore Liz White and promis-
ing ninth-grader Katie Dunn are
both expected to be back for the
Climbers' stretch run into dis-
trict, which will be a week from
out with injuries.

The Climber varsity soccer
girls set another school record
this past week, registering their
fourth and fifth shutouts in a row
to improve to 7-1-2 on the year.
Just days after shattering
the all-time Climber single-game
scoring record with a 15-goal per-
formance against River Ridge,
Shelton's girls avenged a first-
round 2-3 loss by blanking North
Thurston 3-0 here Thursday and
then shut out host Chehalis Tues-
day by a 2-nil count to immortal-
ize themselves in the all-time

Senior Stephanie Neurer
scored in the ninth and 16th
minutes (assists by juniors Amber
Langon and Amanda McClary, re-
spectively) to get the Climbers off
to a fast start against Thurston.
Junior Jackie Harvey frosted it
with a goal in the 66th minute off
an assist by classmate Aimee
Cavaille.
Tuesday it was Cavaille's turn
to score twice, first by way of a
header in the 53rd minute off an
assist by senior Lauren Whiting
and then five minutes later off an
assist by senior Aubrey Metzger.
In goal for her record fifth
straight shutout, upstart ninth-
grader Stacey Ozga played a
technically outstanding game,
said Coach, and made three par-
ticularly key saves.
Tomorrow night the Climbers
start a three-game home stand by
hosting Black Hills. Next Tues-
day they take on Aberdeen and
two nights later host Timberline.
