BOUTWELL WAS elected as
president at a recent organiza-
tional meeting in Shelton. Other
officers of the group include Ernie
Brown from the Matlock Food
Bank, vice president, and Dor-
othy Wilkins of the North Mason
effort, secretary-treasurer.
Boutwell said early efforts of
the alliance would include locat-
ing additional sources of free food
in Western Washington, reducing
the cost of purchased food
through bulk buying, reducing
the cost and effort of transporting
Mason County food bank work-
ers have joined forces to form the
Food Bank Alliance of Mason
County.
The group, said spokesman Ed
Boutwell, is being formed "to
promote communication and coop-
eration among organizations pro-
viding food to needy persons, and
to assist members in accomplish-
ing their common purpose of com-
bating hunger and poverty in Ma-
son County."
Membership applications,
Boutwell said, have been accepted
from the North Mason Food
Bank, Matlock Community Food
Bank, Hood Canal Food Bank,

lighted she was when her literacy
tutor gave her a dictionary. "We
thought it would be great to give
everybody one," he observed.
Mason County Literacy Direc-
tor Lynn Busacca said this week
that she would be distributing the
English dictionaries to students
in the one-on-one reading-im-
provement programs.
"I can't wait to play Santa

English composition or math
class for credit at Olympic College
Shelton must take the ASSET
test, which assesses one's basic
skills in reading, writing and
math.
The test lasts some 21/2 hours.
There is no fee. Testing will start
at 9 a.m. Wednesday, October 20,
at the college.
Individuals who want to take
the test can call 432-5400 to
schedule an appointment. Winter
quarter registration begins on

A Shelton food-handling facili-
ty has been established at the site
of the former National Guard Ar-
mory in Shelton, the home of the
SOCK (Save Our County's Kids)
youth organization. The food-han-
dling facility, now in operation, is
an unloading depot and short-
term storage facility for receiving,
sorting and distributing food ar-
riving from several sources, Bout-
well said.
The alliance is equipping it
with pallet-handling equipment
and pallet racks to deal with tons
of food each month. A refrigerated
