Exploding for 29 points in the
second half, Shelton's
Highclimbers ripped Tumwater
36-6 Friday on Loop Field,
extending their winning streak to
three and their win-loss mark to
4-1.
Still anybody's game at the
half, 7-0, the cOntest turned into
a rout when Tumwater started
making mistakes and Tracy
Armstrong ran two brilliamt punt
-eturns to set up scores.
krmstrong had more than those
wo; he had 202 return yards in
ight runbacks, and came within
n eyelash of breaking open
everal of them. He was named
tighclimber of the Week for his
outstanding play.
The Climbers scored in almost
every way possible - by running,
by passing, by recovering a
fumble, by kicking, and by a
safety.The passing touchdown
was of special importance to
Rocky Nutt. Nutt, a senior end,
caught his fifth of the season in
five games ~lnd kept his magic
string going.
It was a game of pleasure for
the people who never get the
glory of scoring. Dave Myer, a
defensive lineman, jumped on a
Tumwater fumble in the end zone
for a third quarter touchdown.
Linemen seldom get such a thrill.
Dan Bolender caught the
Tumwater quarterback in the
T-Birds' end zone for a rare
safety, scoring two points for
Shelton.
And with 13 seconds left on
the clock, third string quarterback
Ray Krumpols made his first high
school touchdown as a
sophomore, rolling around left
end from l l yards out.
The Climbers, favorites going
into the game, soon found out
that the T-Birds had come to try
to disprove that supposition.
Tumwater was running through
Shelton's defense on several
occasions before the Climbers
could stop them.
Shelton scored the second
time they got their mitts on the
ball. The Climbers received the
opening kickoff, Doug Long
returning the kick to the 43. They
advanced to the 50 where Larry
Dill looped and rolled a punt 34
yards downfield. But Tumwater
punted also, and the Climbers
took over on their own 38.
Rob Settle, who started his
first game at halfback in place of
injured A1 McGee, did the bulk of
the work on the touchdown drive.
Settle did a splendid job of
running the ball all night. In the
drive, he carried for gains of eight,
nine, and seven yards. Neal White
had a big l l yard gaia on a
keeper, and Don Neth finally
capped the drive by running to
paydirt from two yards out. Neal
White kicked the extra point.
McGee was the Climbers'
leading ground gainer who had
rushed for over 100 yards in two
straight games before he sustained
a back injury.
Armstrong had two long punt
returns, and the Climbers got
close to Tumwater's goal, but no
more scoring took place in the
half.
The contest opened wide for
Shelton in the second half.
Tumwater received the kickoff
and was forced to punt. Tracy
Armstrong ran it back 32 yards to
the T-Birds' eight. Don Neth
fumbled on first down, Tumwater
recovering.
However, on second down,
the T-Birds' quarterback rolled to
his left, waving the ball around by
his hip, and discovered that he
had the ball no longer, but had
dropped it in his end zone. To his
horror and Dave Myer's delight,
Myer pounced on the ball for a
touchdown. Shelton led 13-0.
Tumwater had to punt when
they got the ball again, and this
time Armstrong returned it 40
yards to Tumwater's ten. The
Climbers ran two plays, then
White tossed to Nutt for anotheJ
touchdown from the six. Whih
kicked the extra point; the scon
was 20-0."

opposing quarterback for a 15
yard loss in the T-Birds' next

with Tumwater. Martin returned the theft 27 yards. Brad

series of downs, and Tumwater
was forced to punt once more.
Armstrong did the job again,
running it to the visitors' 25.
Six plays later, Rob Settle
scored• He had carried five of
those six plays, and in his first
game as a regular, had a
touchdown. He went over from
inches away. It was then 26-0.
Moments later, it was 28-0 when
Neal White tossed to Bob Martin
for a two-point conversion. It had
been a broken kicking play.
Again Shelton got the ball on
a punt, and o~ee again Armstrong
terrorized Tumwater with another
runback. Terry Knight now in the
game, he passed to Bob Martin on
third down for 14 yards. Martin
was piled upon, and that
advanced the ball 15 yards
downfieid. A fumble ended the
drive on Tumwater's 38. A
penalty set the T-Birds' back as
did two losses, and on third
down, the quarterback was
dropped in the end zone by
defensive lineman Dan Bolender.
The score now 30-0, Shelton put
many reserves in.
Bob Crume ran back the
safety kickoff 24 yards to
Tumwater's 36. The Climbers got
down to the 16 before an
interception stopped them. On
first down, Bill Yandle of
Tumwater shot through the
middle and raced 92 yards for the
T-Birds' only points. The
speedster was the game's leading
rusher with 142 yards, and had
been the source of Shelton's
headaches in the first half.
In two more plays, the ball
changed hands twice. Shelton
fumbled but got the ball back on
an interception by Bob Martin,
who ran it back 27 yards. Bob
Crume gained 16 yards, then ten
more before Ray Krumpols
carried it in himself from 11 yards
out for the score. The extra point
no good, it was 36-6 with hardly
any time on the clock.
Settle led the Climbers on the
ground with 66 yards in 13
carries. Bob Crume had seven
carries for 55 yards. Don Neth
ground out 20 yards in five tries.
Ray Krumpols had 11 yards in
one carry and a tremendous
touchdown-per-carry average, I00
per cent. Neal White gained 25
yards in four carries, and several
more players had three yards or
less.
In the air, Neal White was two
for two for nine yards and a
touchdown, and Terry Knight was
two of three for 30 yards. Paul
Wittenberg, a senior linebacker,
led the team with 11 tackles. The
Climbers held Tumwater to
minus one yard passing in the
game, and virtually cut off
Tumwater's ground game in the
second half except for Yandle's
burst. The T-Birds had 98 yards in
the second half on the ground, 92
of them on one run- with several
substitutes in.
Coach Jack Stark said that the
team had a fine second half. They
started out the first half a little
slow, and didn't play the inspired
football that they did in the
second half. He said in the second
half. "they played like real
Climbers." He also made note of
the many good hits all along the
line, and of several key tackles on
the part of Don Neth, defensive
lineman. Stark gives credit to the
assistant coaches whom he feels
are doing an excellent job with
the team. They are Bill Brickert,
Ron Ellis, Paul Johansson, and
Mike Sims.
The Climbers have lost only
to North Thurston in action thus
far. They have scored 95 points to
their opponents' 45, and have
registered two shutouts. They
have won more games in one
season than the past three
combined.
League play opens next week,
and the Climbers will face the
unbeaten North Thurston Rams
on Loop Field at 8:00 p.m. Many
think that this game will decide
the Black Hills championship.
Stark anticipates a tough game,
and says that his troops have to
play like they did against
Tumwater in the second half last
week.
Last week, Thurston downed
Timberline by a 44-0 score, a
team which Shelton also
whitewashed, 21-0.
