Sports: Coaches develop plans
continued from page A-37
but are discouraged if the school is not
conducting some in-person learning.
Tournaments or spectators aren’t al-
lowed, except for one parent, guardian or
caregiver for each participant in uniform.
Spectators must maintain a distance of
at least 6 feet between each person.
2. “Moderate risk” is 25 to 75 cases
per 100,000 for 14 days and less than 5%
positivity. I '
Scrimmage, intra—team competitions
are allowed for all sporting activities,
and league games are allowed for low ‘
and moderate-risk sporting activities.
The same prohibitions and rules re-
garding tournaments or spectatOrs for
the “high risk” tier also apply to the
“moderate risk” tier. ’ ,
3. “Low risk” is fewer than 25 cases
per 100,000 for 14 days and less than 5%
positivity;
Scrimmage, intra-team competitions
and league games allowed for all sport-
ing activities. .
Tournaments are allowed, as are spec-
tators, as long as they follow the gather-
.ing size limits of the state’s “Safe Start”
plan.
Prohibitions on tournaments for sport-
ing activities do not include postseason, .
playoff, regional or state championship
competitions sanctioned by a statewide
interscholastic activities administrative
and rule-making body that oversees com-
petition in all counties in the state.
Each WIAA sport is also classified into
low-, moderate- and high-risk categories:
I Low risk: Cross country, golf, side—
line/no-contact cheerleading and dance,
swimming and diving, tennis, track and
field. .
I Moderate risk: Baseball, bowling,
gymnastics, soccer, softball Volleyball.

Alexia Hadfield, athletic director and
assistant principal of North Mason High
School, reported that her school has its
district return—to-play plans ready to go.
“Coaches are developing sport-specific
plans for practices, traveling and games,”
Hadfield said. “Once those are approved
and we have the green light to begin
practice, we will be ready for return-to—
play. The safety of our coaching staff and
students is a priority concern.”
Hadfield said the relaxations of stan-'
dards put into place by the new guide— V
lines continue to properly consider the
health and safety of players and coaches
“I do believe, if the plans are followed,
the risk of exposure is low,” Hadfield
said. “Players and coaches do need to fol- ‘
low all the guidance. ‘If the guidance is
not followed, play won’t happen.” ’
Dana Rosenbach, superintendent for
the North Mason School District, said
the Governor’s Office might have spoken
with some school districts but she knows
North Mason did not have direct input
on the new guidance.
. “WIAA represented the schools and
worked closely with the Governor’s Of-
fice and the DOH to develop these re-
vised guidelines,” said Rosenbach, who
echoed 'Hadfield’s optimistic assessment.
“She said it best; if players and coaches
follow the guidance, I believe the risk
of exposure is low, and students will be
able to return to play.”
Rosenbach emphasized that her dis-
trict’s coaches have been working with
the athletic director in preparation for
an opportunity to return to play and
have been eager to put their plans "in
place when appropriate.
