The developments will be patterned after the one in the Capitol F'orest in Thurston County, which was a pilot, development for the. department. The plan includes five to eight overnight and day use camping areas large enough to accommodate 10 to 12 families overnight. Other plans include development of view points and trails for horseback riding, hiking and motor bike riding. The first camp to be finished was completed this fall and is called Camp Spilhnan. The camp area includes about 10 acres and is located on the Tahuya River in a stand of cottonwood and DoUglas Fir. The present development covers about two acres and includes restroom and water facilities, four picnic tables, for day use, four tent camp sites and " two trailer sites. A special feature of the area is r ' Recreation Development Planned "a small amphitheatre type of area which can be used for group gatherings and activities. Work on the development of the area, as with other projects in the district, was done by boys from the Mission Creek Youth ('amp. Boys from tile youth camp, which is operated by the Department of Institutions and houses about 45 boys in their teens. The youths are sent to the youth camp from the Cascadia Diagnostic Center in Tacoma. As the initial development of Camp Spilhnan is concluded, the developnIent of a second picnicking and c;,mping site, the Paul Sharpe Scenic l'icnic arca, is being developed. Located between Aldrich l,ake and a high bank overlooking Hood Canal, the area offers a spectacular view of the Olympics and tile shore of tile canal. Of historical note is the remains of an old log chute which was used to send logs zooming down the steep bank to the canal after they had been yarded out of Aldrich Lake. The present development of the area inch|des three picnic tables, garbage cans and rest room facilities. Plans for the development of the area include five to eight overnight camping sites, along with the day use picnic facilities. Plans also call for trails to, be extended along the ridge, which provides the speclacular view. Tile development is expected to be completed by Sept. I, 197 I. These, along with olher similar small developments at other points in the state lands will provide additional outdoor recreation area for lhe growing number of people demanding this type of facility.
