Highclimbers still contenders
for 3A Narrows League title
Last Friday, the Shelton foot-
ball team suffered a disap-
pointing 1-point loss to North
Thurston on its senior night.
While many could say the game
wasn't great because nobody scored
during the second half, that's tak-
ing credit away from the Highclimb-
ers' defensive line, which forced the
Rams to punt on fourth down three
times during the half and held
North Thurston out of the end zone.
It's this massive defensive effort
Which, if it holds through the next
two games, will be crucial for the
Highclimbers in the playoffs and
will make for games worth watch-
ing.
And even though Shelton now
has a loss on its record, I want
everyone to realize that the High-
climbers are still contenders for the
3A Narrows League title.
This, of course, depends on a cou-
ple of things. The first is that Tim-
berline needs to beat North Thur-
ston this Friday. If the Blazers can
pull off a cross-town rivalry victory
over the Rams, that will give them
the advantage within the league
standings and tie Shelton with
North Thurston for second place.
The next factor to come into play
is that Shelton will need to defeat
Timberline on Oct. 26 at South
Sound Stadium in Lacey.
If both of these outcomes occur,
the Highclimbers will be in a three-
way tie for the league title, which
is pretty impressive
for a team that was
expected to finish
in the middle of the
league after going
2-8 last season.
So far this year,
the home crowds
have been impres-
By EMILY sive, with the
HANSON bleachers packed
and the fans alive.
I was especially
impressed with the fans last Fri-
day, who sat through two scoreless
quarters in the first rainstorm of
the season and continued to cheer
on their Highclimbers. Chilled to
the bone, I'll admit that I wanted
to head home by the end of the
third.
With the exception of Shelton's
game at North Mason last month,
I haven't made it to an away game
for the Highclimbers yet. This Fri-
day, the Shelton boys are taking
on Mt. Tahoma in Tacoma, which I
know can be a long trip. However,
if you make it, you can help the
Climbers bring home a victory by
cheering them on and hopefully
drowning out the Mt. Tahoma sup-
porters.
For those who can't go to Ta-
coma, how about going to Lacey and
cheering on the Blazers? It certain-
ly couldn't hurt to support an oppo-
nent if it means knocking the Rams
out of first place, right?
