In its last• week of regular season
play, the SheIton boys' tennis team
went 1-1.
The Highclimbers earned a 4-1 win
against Central Kitsap on Oct. 9 at
home.
"I moved the guys around to try and
give some JV players a chance to expe-
rience the varsity level and to just keep
things fresh for the tournament." head
coach John Perry said. "The match was
closer than I thought it would be and after
all the first sets were done, we were losing
2-3 with only the singles matches easily
at hand."
Brandon Goodale and Andrew John-
son. playing at No. 1 and No. 2 singles re-
spectively, both won their second sets for
match wins.
"It was nice to see the singles guys take
control and give us an early 2-0 lead,• as it
OCT. 11:
made things less stress-
ful waiting for the dou-
bles matches to conclude,
knowing we needed only
one win ~o secure the vic-
tory," Perry said~
At No. i doubles. John
Pentony and Zach Lund
came back after losing
Olympia ........ 5 their first set to win the
Shelton .......... 0 next two for a match win,
he said.
TOMORROW: "Alex Deacon and Dal-
Shelton at ton Jaske did the same,
3A Narrows so that notched the win."
League he said.
Tournament, Deacon and Jaske
8 a.m. played at No. 2 doubles.
"CK put all of their
strong players at doubles, so it made for a
very competitive match." Perry said.
The team's final regular season match
was against Olympia on Oct. 11. Shelton
lost 5-0.
"Olympia was our last match, so I
stressed to the guys that it was a practice
match and I wanted everyone healthy
and not injured after the match," Perry
said. "I moved some guys around again
and we tried to keep. things a little light-
er since the match didn't really mean
anything."
With Deacon feeling sore from the Cen-
tral Kitsap match• Perry sa~ him out and
moved a junior varsity player up to No. 2
doubles with Pentony.
"The best match was No. I doubles
where Goodale and Jaske played a very
close match, losing 6-4. 7-5." Perry said.
"Olympia has arguably one of the best
tennis teams in the state, so even though
we didn't win a match, we were very com-
petitive even without one of our top play-
ers in the lineup."
The 3A Narrows League tournament
begins at 8 a.m. tomorrow at Capital City
Tennis Center in Tumwater. The ~ourna-
ment is set to conclude at 1 p.m. on Satur-
day in Tumwater.
"We are very excited to play in the
league tournament," Perry said.
Johnson will be at No. 1 singles while
Josh Priest will play at No. 2 singles and
Nick Vernon will be at No. 3 singles.
The doubles teams will be Deacon
and Pentony at No. 1, Goodale and
Jaske at No. 2 and Lund with DeMattos
at No. 3.
"Deacon and Pentony should be
seeded in the top two or three and I am
looking forward to seeing them play,"
Perry said. "I am also looking forward
to watching the other two doubles
teams as well, as I have seen both of
those teams play as good as anyone
else in the league at times, so it just de-
pends on who's on when it comes time
to play."
He said the singles players may have a
tougher time at the tournament.
"Usually, there are some very good
players in the singles draw, but it will be
a great experience for them and hopefully
they can notch a few wins in the process."
Perry said.
