A change in the Shelton girls' swimming
schedule during the weekend of Oct. 6 and
7 sprang an unexpected meet on the Lady
Highclimbers last week.
The team was originally scheduled to
swim at home against Foss on Oct. 11. How-
ever, the weekend change moved the meet
to Oct. 9 and the team didn't know until
Oct. 8.
This change canceled the team's meet at
Gig Harbor, which was scheduled for Oct.
10.

Nearly every Shelton cross coun-
try runner improved his or her time
on the Highclimbers' home course
last week.
All but two of the girls and two Of
the boys ran the Lake Isabella State
Park course on Oct. 10 with a faster
time than the team did last month.
"We had a great meet, in terms of
the runners improving their times
from the first time they ran on our
home course," head coach Daryl
White said. "Our course is one of the
tougher ones in perhaps the entire
state. It is not one that anyone will
ever get a personal record on. It is a
course that is run just to place and
the watch can be thrown out."
Junior Cody Williamson won the
boys' 5,000-meter race with a time
of 17 minutes, 27.39 seconds, less
than one second slower than he ran
the course on Sept. 19.
Senior Zach Taylor improved his
time by 17 seconds, taking sixth
place at 18:20.83. Sophomore Dari-
us Burke finished six seconds faster,
this time in 13th place at 19:10.76.
Nearly one minute faster, junior Ry-
der Phelan took 14th place with a
time of 19:15.17. Rounding out the
varsity boys' team was junior Adam
Tweed in 15th place with a time of
19:16.75, down from 20:27.84.
On the girls' side, the top two
Shelton finishers swapped places.
On Sept. 19, freshman Lindsey
Goldsby finished in sixth place
with a time of 25:29.14 and fresh-
man Courtney Burke took seventh
place with a time of 25:36.14. For
this second race at Lake Isabella,
Burke came in sixth with a time of
23:22.09 while Goldsby took sev-
enth at 23:35.81.
Junior Carley Kunkle was the
next Lady Highclimber to cross the
finish line with a time of 25:23.70,
good enough for 16th place and an
improvement of nearly two rain-
utes. Sophomore Delaney Atkinson
finished in 19th place with a time
of 25:34.41, down from 27:18.57.
Rounding out the girls' varsity team
was junior Serena Ranney with a
time of 25:42.95, improved from
27:32.61.
White said the runners' perfor-
mance showed him that they were
ready for the 3A Narrows League
meet, which was yesterday at Ft.
Steilacoom State Park in Lake-
wood.
"I was very pleased with every-
one's performances ... and as I said
earlier, the teams are ready for post
season," White said.

is the Westside Classic at 10:30 a.m.
on Oct. 27 at American Lake Golf
Course in American Lake.
"The top four teams and top 20
individuals go to the Westside Clas-
sic and I am confident both teams
will qualify as a team," White said.
"I fully expect the boys to challenge
for the league title and for the girls
to fight for one of the top three
spots."
