The Puget Sound Blood Center is launching a campaign on Oct. 22 to buy a new "bloodmobile"

Donation center looks for new 'bloodmobile'
By NATALIE JOHNSON
The Puget Sound Blood Center is
launching a campaign on Oct. 22 to
buy a new "bloodmobile" and support
truck to serve Mason and Thurston
Counties.
"In those two counties there's
5,000 donors each year," said Dave
Larsen, director of communications
for the blood center. "With the new
truck it will give them some added
capacity to go to some places we
aren't already going."
The bloodmobile is a mobile dona-
tion center, Larsen said, with three
beds all fully equipped for blood do-
nations.
The support truck however, car-
ries all the supplies and equipment
needed to set up a blood drive at a
school or community center.
The center needs to raise $150,000
for both of the new vehicles.
Half of the blood donated in Mason
and Thurston County comes in either
through the bloodmobile or the mo-
bile blood drive, which amounts to
7,500 units per year, Larsen said.
"The easier and more convenient
you make it for people, the more like-
ly they are to donate," he said.
The Puget Sound Blood Center
wants to increase those donations to
8,000 units per year, Larsen said.
The center has scheduled its kick-
off event for the fundraising program
for 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at the
Tumwater Walmart.
Several blood drives are coming up
in Mason County as well.
A blood drive is scheduled from
8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday,
Oct. 19. at the North Mason High
School parking lot and a bloodmo-
bile will be at the Shelton Walmart
from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday,
Oct. 29.
