A ninth Mason County resident
has died from the coronavirus.
' At 4 p.m. Tuesday, the Mason
County Public Health reported the
death, and a total of 538 people test-
ing positive for COVID-19.
That includes 47 active cases, none
hospitalized in Mason County; 13,184
tests have been conducted. Of the
nine deaths, five were residents of
Fir Lane Health & Rehabilitation in
I Shelton.
The new death is related to Fir
Lane, the department reported.

Of the Mason County residents
who have tested positive for the dis-
ease, 93 are 19 years old and younger;
207 are ages 20 to 39; 135 are between
the ages of 40 and 59; 92 are between-
the ages of 60 and 79; and 21 are 80
and older.
To reduce the spread of the coro-
navirus, the agency encourages ev-
eryone to wash their hands often and
avoid close contact with others; cover
your mouth and nose with a mask
around others and always cover your
coughs and sneezes; and monitor your
health daily and stay home if you are
sick or experiencing any COVID—19
symptoms.

An apparent case of following too
closely left two drivers injured and a
highway blocked Oct. 15.
A 1999 Chevrolet Silverado pickup
driven by 18—year-old Rochester resi-
dent Jesaja James L. McLean was
behind a 2012 Chevrolet Express
van driven by 42-year-old Shelton
resident Ruben E. Gonzalez Rodas at
8:35 a.m., according to the Washing-
ton State Patrol. The vehicles were
northbound on state Route 3 between
mileposts 8 and 9 when the wreck oc-

Gonzalez had stopped for traffic
when McLean’s pickup struck Gon-
zalez’s van from behind. Both drivers
were taken to Mason General Hospital
for treatment. The WSP was joined by
Central Mason Fire—EMS in respond—
ing to the wreck, which blocked both
lanes of the highway, forcing drivers
to find alternate. routes.
McLean’s vehicle was towed away.
The incident report was filed by
Shelton’s newest member of the
Washington State Patrol, Trooper Jeb
S. Jewell, recently graduated from
the academy.
