The incumbent has voted against raising the minimum wage, against paid family medical leave and against as- suring full rest and meal breaks for nurses and front-line workers. This is a candidate looking backward and stuck in the past. The 35th deserves better. Fortunately, we have the choice of a prepared, thoughtful and creative candidate — Colton Myers. Colton has the smarts, education and experi- ence to address our current health and economic challenges rather than retreat from them. His work as a health policy analyst means he can and will bring better medical care ac— cess and prescription transparency to the 35th District. His research expe— rience means he’ll find the facts lead- ing to realistic solutions rather than regressive ones. Check out Colton’s website at www.electcoltonmyers.com and I think you’ll agree that he is ready to ‘ work hard for hard-working families and bring us all a stronger future for our part of Puget Sound. Sincerely, Donna Branch-Gilby Port Orchard False narrative Editor, the Journal, I am writing today because I see a constant barrage of charges of social- ism being thrown around. The Demo- cratic Party has not put forth any- thing that is socialist. That charge is simply a misunderstanding of what we call “capitalism” and “socialism.” There is one train of thought that characterizes itself as conservative but is libertarian. This movement is under the impression that the only valid standard of capitalism is the holy writ of Milton Friedman and Ayn Rand. That is ridiculous. The fact is that both socialism and capitalism are theories. In practice, there is no pure system. I know that the “capitalist” crowd rails against rules. But there are going to be lots of rules in our complex economy and the only difference is how those rules are slanted in their benefit to vari- ous economic actors. Currently, we have skewed those rules toward the top income categories for the past 40-plus years. The result is in. We are experiencing a predictable social problem as a result. For the record, I think'that Fried- man was a really smart guy. I also think Paul Krugman and Joseph Stiglitz are pretty smart guys, too. I characterize all of them as capital- ist. Elizabeth Warren is a capitalist too. I think that a healthy economy requires a synthesis of their ideas. What I think is madness is laisse- faire capitalism. That is a simply the rule of the jungle and will only benefit the top predators, who are not true capitalists but rather 01i- gopolists. I shake my head when I hear about socialists and communists coming to get us. That is pure non- sense. A universal health care pay- ment system and social safety net is not socialism. Canada has a single- payer system. The United Kingdom has a nationalized health care sys- tem. European nations have highly regulated universal systems. None of those nations are socialist. They all have private ownership and even mint billionaires. Their wealthy live very comfortably. If you are voting based on one party being capitalist and one being socialist, then you are voting based on a false belief. I hate to break it to you, but even AOC is not a true socialist. In fact, I find that social- ists love the benefits of capitalism. I also find they make better capitalists than most that portray themselves as capitalists. I find the latter are just plain greedy and have formed an ide- ology that serves to portray greed as some noble principle. Andrew Makar Hoodsport Three generations for MacEwen Editor, the Journal, In these times, we need leaders who are invested in our community, stay true to their principles and are willing to work with others to get results. State Rep. Drew MacEwen is one ' of these leaders. He and his wife were instrumental in bringing a YMCA to Shelton, in- vesting in future generations of Ma— son County kids. He is a business owner himself and recognizes unique economic chal- lenges faced by small businesses, especially during a pandemic. He continues to push for the Legislature to make the tough decisions to the needs of our communities without raising taxes. Most importantly, he knows how to disagree without being disagree- able. We are three generations asking you to join us in voting for Drew. 2 Julie Sund Nichols Brian Sund V Bob Sund Shelton Our nation will pay Editor, the Journal, As a leader in several‘multina- tional companies over the course of my business career, I worked and lived in Asia, Latin America and the Middle East for nearly two decades. I have foreign friends from those days and I’ve seen comments from them and from others about how amazing and ridiculous it is that voters have to stand in line for eight to 10 hours to vote in America. “Get your act togeth- er” was one comment I saw yesterday in a news report from England. An- other related that India yes, India —— doesn’t have these issues. I think it’s important that all Americans un- derstand that the long lines are a re- sult of years of the Republican Party’ 5 deliberate program to disenfranchise Democratic-leaning voters. Under- stand that the Republican Party doesn’t have a platform —‘ their only plan is to stop the disadvantaged from voting. Those lines? They’re a result of decades of gerrymandering. And in Texas, Republican leaders have tried to disenfranchise millions of voters in Harris County by allowing only one vote collection station, instead of the planned six. Republicans, the Party of Lincoln, the party that forced through the 13th, 14th and 15th' amendments as part of Reconstruction in the wake of the Civil War, are enforcing Jim Crow and effective poll taxes — on Black citizens. It is shameful and our country will pay a price for another century as a result. Dana Partridge Shelton see LE1TERS, page A-9
