Vote Myers,
Huffman in 35th
Editor, the Journal,
I encourage all 35th Legislative
District voters to choose Colton My-
ers and Darcy Huffman as the best
for the Washington House of Rep-
resentatives. They are grounded in
what we need in Olympia and will
listen to voters’ concerns. They will
work with the Democratic majority to
get important needs met for the 35th
Legislative District, including good-
paying jobs, quality education, health
care, internet connectivity, equality,
affordable housing, and solutions to
the climate crisis we are in and expe-
riencing already.
Our current state representatives
have failed us and have no solutions
to pressing problems. It’s time for a
change to Colton and Darcy for real
solutions and leadership. I urge ev-
eryone to vote for Democrats in all
positions, local, state and federal.

Myers will
bring fresh air
Editor, the Journal,
’ For the past six years, the 35th
Legislative District hasn’t had a
progressive voice in Olympia to keep
us on par with the rest of Washing-
ton. The 35th District, by virtually
every metric, has been left behind
and taken for granted by ineffec-
tive leadership. In many parts of
our legislative district, economies
are worse off than the state aver-
age, and many portions never fully
recovered from the last recession:
one in four children currently live in
poverty, median household income is
Well below the state average, while
unemployment remains well above.
Current incumbent Rep. Dan Griffey
has routinely undermined working
people of our district — having voted
against raising the minimum wage,
voting against lowering property tax-
es, voting against paid family medi-
cal leave, voting against easing ac-
cess to TANF for struggling families
and voting against workers’ rights.
Colton Myers will bring in good,
union, livable-wage jobs, promote a
community that encourages diversity
and innovation, and help transition
our substantial military community
, into a civilian workforce.
With regards to education, even
prior to the COVID pandemic, our
rural school districts were strug-
gling. In Mason County alone, our
high school graduation rates were
well below the state average, while
five of six public schools rank in
the bottom half of the state (three
of those in the bottom 10%). Just
recently the Shelton School District
announced over $7 million in budget
cuts, and layoffs of school district
employees. Rep. Griffey has exacer-
bated these challenges by voting to
take money used fOr public educa-
tion to instead fund charter schools.
Colton will champion fully funding
our public schools (and special edu-
cation) and ensure that our educa—
tors have the tools and resources
' needed to continue to be successful
in our children’s lives.
With regards to health outcomes
and access to affordable health care,
our district ranks near the bottom of
the state in terms of health outcomes
and access to clinical care, including
behavioral health and primary care
providers. Rep. ~Griffey voted against
prescription drug price transpar-
ency, a long-term care program for
seniors, rest and meal breaks for
our nurses and front-line workers,
and our state’s public option. As a
senior health policy analyst work-
ing for Washington State Health
Care Authority, Colton will bring his
professional background in health
policy to champion improvements to
our health care system and ensure
quality health care for all Washing-
tonians.
Colton was born and raised in
’the Kitsap County part of the 35th
District and currently lives in the
Thurston County part of our district.
As the son of a third-generation elec-
trical union worker (IBEW Local 77),
he understands the importance of
strong unions and livable-wage jobs.
As a graduate from the Evans School
of Public Policy & Governance at the
UniVersity of Washington, Colton
will bring his research and policy
analysis skills to make evidence—
based decisions in the Legislature.
With our votes, Colton Myers will
fight for us in Olympia. '

Question Dave ,
Daggett’s math
Editor, the Journal,
Dave’s on-going series of letters to
the editor explains that rich people
in Seattle burn more fuel in private
jets and yachts than poor people in
Mason County and thus a carbon .
tax will disproportionally harm King
County residents and it will benefit
Mason Countyresidents.
According to my math, Mason
County has more drivers per capita
I than King County and we travel lon-
ger distances for commuting and lei-
sure than people living in Seattle.
Math will also tell you that Mason
County has more miles of shorelines
than any other county in the state.
Among the miles and miles of shore-
lines there are many of us with boats,
which often have thirsty outboards.
My educated guess Would be that
Mason County residents per capita
would pay much more of the carbon
tax and Seattle citizens would benefit
from our carbon tax receipts.
I for one support common sense
approaches which state Sen. Tim
Sheldon brings to the table:
Phil
Allyn
MacEwen good
for retirees
Editor, the Journal,
Thinking of retirees and seniors in
the election year, it is important that
we vote for a candidate who has our
interests at heart. For the last sev-
eral legislative sessions, Rep. Drew
MacEwen has been instrumental in
drafting legislation to assist the se-
niors and retirees of this great county
with the possibility of property tax
relief. As property values continue to
skyrocket and the associated taxes
with them, it is important we find a
way to provide reliefl protection for
our older community members. Rep.
MacEwen is this candidate. He has
fought for this relief and I know he
will continue to do so. I am hopeful
that Rep. MacEwen will be successful
in passing this desperately needed
legislation so retirees like myself can
look forward to living in this wonder-
ful community.
