remove English ivy from the banks of Johns
Creek, close to its headwaters on Oakland Bay
on the Bayshore Preserve. During the third an-
nual Orca Recovery Day, the Mason Conserva-
tion District joined with the land trust and Shel-
ton YMCA to help people and areas: removing
evasive English ivy and blackberry vines while
planting Oregon grape, salmonberry, vine ma-
ples and snowberries at the Bayshore Preserve,
and planting camas bulbs and wildflowers next
to the Shelton YMCA, which is under construc-
tion.
LEFl': Shelton resident Crystal Collins plants
flowers Saturday next to the Shelton YMCA be-
ing constructed at the intersection of Shelton
Springs Road and East Wallace Kneeland Boule-
vard. The wildflowers will grow in a stormwater
retention area to capture pollutants coming from
the parking lot.
FAR LEFT: The tools and gloves were quaran-
tined for at least four days before use by the vol-
unteers, and disinfected between uses.
