“After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the
water, the heavens were opened and he saw the
Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling
on him. And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my
dearly loved Son,'who brings me great joy.’
Matthew 3:16 NLT
Remember we talked about John the Baptist
being Jesus’ cousin? He was the one to preach the
Messiah was coming, and urged people to repent
' of their sins and turn to God, because the Kingdom
of Heaven was near. He got his name “John the
Baptist” because he baptized people in water, who
wanted to repent and turn to God.
Well, imagine how he felt when Jesus came to
him to be baptized! Here he was, preaching one
greater than he was soon coming, one so much
greater that John said he wasn’t worthy to even be
his slave or carry his sandals. That this greater one
would baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire,
(Verse 11), and then Jesus shows up to be baptized
by him! Verse 14 says he tried to talk Jesus out
of it! He told Jesus, “I am the one who needs to
be baptized by ydu, so why are YOU coming to
ME?” Jesus said, “It should be done, for we must
carry out all that God requires.” So John agreed

Good News!
to baptize him, and we see that the heavens were
opened as Jesus came up out of the water, and the
Holy Spirit descended on him like a dove, resting on
him. Then God spoke.
Jesus was so obedient to God, His Father, that
He Himself did everything He asks us to do,
even though He didn’t sin, and didn’t need to be
forgiven. But He had come to Earth to go through
life as a human, and He wanted to be able to relate
to us. Immediately after His baptism, He went in
the wilderness for 40 days, where He was tempted
by Satan. Of course Jesus wasn’t defeated! But
sometimes we are! He was still tempted, so He
could feel what we go through, and show us how to
endure.
I like how 1 Corinthians 10:13 tells us, “The
temptations in your life are no different from what
others experience. And‘God is faithful. He will
not allow the temptation to be more than you can
stand. When you are tempted, He will show you a
way out so that you can endure.”
So why is it so important we get baptized as Jesus
did? Jesus told a rich young man, in John 3:5-6, “I
assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God
without being born of water and the Spirit. Humans
can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit
gives birth to spiritual life.”
So that means it’s VERY important! When we are
baptized in water, then we can be baptized with the
Holy Spirit and have spiritual life! And Jesus says,
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can
come to the Father, except through me.” John 14:6
1 am so happy God gave us Jesus, as the way to
lead us to Him! He loved'us SO MUCH that He gave
the world “His one and only Son, so that everyone
who believes in Him will not perish, but have
eternal life. God sent His Son into the world not
to judge the world, but to save the world through
Him.” John 3:16-17.
Thank you Jesus! For all that you went through for
us! .
