Over the summer, Donna
Mann sprouted an idea: collect
dried lavender to make sachets.
These sachets would become gifts
for the woman sailors aboard the
USS Gonzalez, a Navy ship.
Her son-in-law: Commander
Alistair Borchert, is the skipper
of the vessel. Traditionally,
her daughter, Tanya Borchert,
oversees arranging a total of
about 300 or more "Christmas
socks" for the ship's crew as a way
of helping the sailors feel special.
"The scent of summer tucked
into a little sachet at Christmas
seems especially wonderful. I'm
excited to send that loving touch
from our homes to women who are
away from their homes in service
to our country at Christmas,"
Mann said.
She plans to prepare more
than a hundred sachets for
all the woman sailors. Due to
various circumstances, some of
them don't end up receiving mail
from anyone while they're at
sea. "Some people are especially
alone at Christmas when
they're in the military and it's
just a way of saying 'You're not
