Harstine Island:
Season brings us a time of than
By JOHN COOPER
Today is the 298th day of the
year. That means that there are
just 27 days left until Thanksgiv
ing Day, when the community cluh
will host the traditional holiday
dinner at the community hall on
Harstine Island.
Two days will elapse ater
Thanksgiving Day, then the doors
of the community hall will open at
10 a.m. to reveal the shimmering
display of items in tile ttarstine
Island Women's Club's ttoliday
House.
Today is Thanksgiving Day in
Grenada, commemorating the in-
vasion and liberation of that is-
land in the South Atlantic by the
United States and Caribbean al-
lies on October 25, 1983.
Thirty-four days from today
will pass by and usher in opening
night of Santa Goes on Strike, the
Christmastime gift to the com-
munity from the Harstine Island
Theatre Club, on Friday, Novem-
ber 30, at 8 p.m. in the community
hall.
BIG DOINGS are coming up,
but we don't have to wait impa-
tiently for their arrival. ,Just two
clays from today, on Saturday, Oc-
tober 27, Pat LeClair, once again
will open her house as the place
tbr local artisans to display their
creations fl'om 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Visit(n's can relax and enjoy the
ambience as they browse through
rooms filled with hand-crafted

The there's Halloween and
[tallowe'en on Wednesday, Octo-
ber 31. One can observe the day
in one of two ways or maybe in
both ways. Halloween, without
the apostrophe was borrowed as a
name 1o u;(, in place of Samhain,
which the ancient Celtic pagans
observed on October 31. It was
the Celtic New Year, was thought
of as "summer's end" and was the
word ibr November in the Gaelic
language. In the 19th Century im-
migrant Irish and Scots helped to
plant this concept in our soil. Over
the years it was embellished with
goblins and witches, shenanigans
and bonfires.
On the other hand Hallowe'en
spelled with the apostrophe was
a religious holiday celebrated by
early Christians. It was called All
Hallow-even, All Hallows Eve,
Hallow Eve and All Saints Eve
and was observed earlier in the
year. October 31 was eventually
designated in the Ninth Century
as the day to celebrate the eve of"
All Saints Day on November 1.
ttappy Hallowe'en or Halloween!
Take your pick.
With the days of October wan-
ing and the days of November
traveling our way full bore down
the pike of time, it can be said that
thll has settled in for sure. This
year the colorful foliage has been a
particularly vivid visual reminder
that autumn is hunkering down to
stay awhile. The process whereby
the leaves of deciduous trees turn
to yellow, orange, pink and red is a
finely tuned one. Chemical chang-

themselves to survive well dur-
ing the winter and store vital in-
gredients for jump-starting a new
growth of greenery in the spring.
If the leaves were not sometimes
given a nudge to leave the limbs
by winds such as we have been
having, they would tax the respi-
ratory function of trees and have
an effect deleterious to their well
being. Beautiful foliage is not only
a treat for human eyes, but also a
sign that says "trees at work on a
wondrous task of survival."
A RECENT incident served as
another reminder that fall is here.
An island resident on his way to
work last week was driving on
North Island Drive when a deer
plunged out of the roadside wood-
land and in front of his car. The
fleeing animal, which the islander
believes was being pursued by
hunters, was just suddenly there.
The collision was inevitable. The
days of fall are darker, windier
and wetter and this adds hazards
to driving. Be alert.
