Thursday, Oct. 26, 2023 — Shelton—Mason County Journal - Page 19 Climber Victory By Matt Baide For the Journal Shelton earned its second league win of the season 34-- 20 against Black Hills in an Evergreen Conference game Friday at Jack Stark Field in Shelton. Shelton coach Mark Smith said he didn’t think his team played a clean football game against the Wolves. “We had I think four turn- overs in this one. I think we just overcame adversity and unfortunately, we’ve had a lot of adversity this year so we’re getting pretty good at over— coming it,” Smith said. “I still think our best football is still out there unfortunately. Hope— fully, we get to see it.” Black Hills led 14—6 after the first quarter, but Shelton responded with 21 points in the second quarter for a 28~14 lead at halftime. Each team scored a touchdown in the sec~ ond hall". Smith said sophomore wide receiver Kody Brotherton had a good game for the High— climbers and he compliment- ed the defense for forcing 10 three and outs. “Climber nation showed up, senior nighi went just line." Rochester beat Shelton and Aberdeen beat Rochester earlier this season which means ifthe Highclimb- ers lose, their season is over. “Any time you can make the last game of the season be a very meaningful game, that’s fun,” Smith said. “It’s not that you’ve got it locked up and you’re playing in an— other game for seeding pur- poses. It’s not that you’re just playing a game because it’s on your schedule. this is like a playoff game. ‘i on have to win it to advance. If you don’t win it, you’re out. From that stand- point, that’s exciting. You’re playing meaningful games at the end of the year, and it ac- tually comes down to the last game of the year.” Smith said there is no love lost between Shelton and Aberdeen. “There wasn’t (love lost) when l was in high school back in l985 and there probably The Shelton High School volleyball team took on Rochester during an Ev- ergreen Conference match Oct. 19 at Terry Gregg Court in the Shelton Mini-Dome. The Climbers won 3—1 . It’s going to be physical. We’re going to get our road warrior attire on, and our goal is to get back on the bus. In order to get back on the bus, we’ve got to win on Friday.” Each ofthe past two seasons came down to the final game of the season between these two teams. Two years ago, Shelton traveled to Aberdeen and lost to force a Kansas tiebreaker, with the Highclimbers falling to Rochester and Aberdeen to end the Highclimbers’ season. Last season, Shelton beat Aberdeen at home 41—34 to force a tiebreaker, and Shel- ton earned the fourth spot out of the conference, falling to Washougal 36—34. Smith is not happy about playing in another Kansas tiebreaker, but he rants the opportunity to play in it this season. “Tell us where to show up and we’ll show up.” Smith said. “Hopefully, we have a chance to show up in that this year because if we don’t win on Friday. then we Won’t even have a chance.”
