Those who remain in me, and in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.” —— John 15:5 NLT Halloween is almost here! Are you excited? Do you have a costume? Have your Mom and Dad decorated the house and yard, and bought candy for the trick-or—treaters? Well did you know October 31 is also Reformation Day? ‘ On October 31, 1517, it is said that a monk, named Martin Luther, nailed a piece of paper to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, that contained 95 theses. That started the Protestant Reformation movement. At that time, the Roman Catholic church was the religious authority in all of Western Europe. People like you and me did not have a Bible. We had to rely on what our priests read and interpreted. Martin Luther wanted people to see they didn’t have to go through another human being to have a relationship with Jesus. They didn’t have to pay someone to forgive them for their sins. Only Jesus can forgive sins. And the Lutheran church grew out of his followers. ' My mother raised me as Catholic and Mormon. Two very different religions. 1 go to a different church now, because I read the Bible for myself, and foundiothers who understood the Bible the way I do. Some Mormon missionaries came to my door a few years ago, and asked if I knew Jesus Christ. I said yes, I had a home church, and I love Jesus very much. They went from happy to sad very quickly, and I told them I had been Mormon as a very little girl, and could I pray with them? They said yes, and I thanked the Lord for these fine young men, who were in His service, sharing the gospel, and telling others about Jesus. I asked Jesus to bless them, and help their work be fruitful, because we are all branches of the same vine. They walked away uplifted and smiling. We don’t have to fight about who is right or wrong! We can , encourage each other! So this Tuesday remember Halloween is also shared with Reformation Day. We can thank the Reformers, like Martin Luther, who were brave enough to say what they thought. Because of them, we can hold a Bible for ourselves, and read it for ourselves. We can worship where we choose. That’s why there are so many different churches in the world. And, remember, we are all branches of the same vine! Have .a safe and Happy Halloween!
