Shelton-Mason County Journal • By EMILY HANSON The Mary M. Knight foot- ball team held fast to the ball - and its victory - in a pivotal game played almost entirely in pouring rain. "I thought they played SATURDAY: Mary I _24 Wishkah ...... 16 SATURDAY: Mary M. Knight at Lake Quinault, 1 p.m. extraor- dinarily well," Mike Ev- ans, head coach, said. "It was a tough game and the kids never quit. It's really hard to be more proud of them than I am right now." The score was close throughout the four quar- ters of the Knight Owls' Homecoming game against Wishkah on Saturday, Oct. 22. MMK scored first with a touchdown from junior quarterback Kyle Willey late in the first quarter. Wishkah wasn't able to re- spond with a TD of its own until midway through the second quarter. The Knight Owls retook the lead when junior corner Nick Dierkop intercepted a Wishkah pass late in the second quarter and ran it in. Midway through the third quarter, Wishkah tied the score for the second time and the two teams went into the fourth quarter tied at 16, Wishkah came as close as close as the Owl 5-yard line to scoring but junior defensive end Cory O'Neil stripped the ball, giving the Knight Owls possession once against with 5:51 remaining to play. Willey sealed the victory for the Knight Owls with his second touchdown of the day. "I think we did really well," junior tight end Matt Oien said. "We had some great blocking, really good passes and some good runs, too. It was a really tough game but we did a great job defensively." See Owls on page C-3 Journa photo by Em Hanson Mary M. "We looked at this match as progress," Beck said. "We improved each game." The Lady Highclimb- ors lost to Bellarmine on Wednesday, Oct. 19 in three games: 8-25, 10-25 and 13- 25. "Bellarmine is the num- ber one team in the state," Beck said. "They're a good club with some amazing players. Our goal was to cel- ebrate every point possible and see what happened. We did that pretty well in games two and three." Beck said the highlight of the match was when sopho- more Mackenzie McGuire started the third game with what the team calls a "moon ball." "Mackenzie served the ball up to the ceiling and Bellarmine shanked it," Beck said. "Then she served her normal serve and Bel- larmine shanked again be- cause they were prepared for another moon." McGuire scored the only two aces of the night against Bellarmine. Beck said she served 4-4 for the night. "] was really hoping our two seniors would have their toughest serving nights but it was a tough night for them," Beck said. This was the last match of the season for the Lady Highclimbers and was also senior night for Caitlyn Ernst and Lolly Jones, who both played varsity for the last three seasons, and for senior Miranda Armga, who played her sophomore year and for half of this season. Beck said junior Court- ney Hanson took serve-re- ceive best throughout the night with Bellarmine hit- ting to her 35 times. "Courtney handled it pretty well," he added. As a team, the Lady Highclimbers dug 20 times, with Jones leading with five and Hanson digging four times. The team scored just nine kills against Bellar- mine. Jones led again with four kills. Looking at the team's win-loss record, it would be easy to assume it did not have a successful sea- son. However, Beck said he judges a loss by whether or not the team arrived ready See Vol eyball on page C-5 gainst armlne Journa DnoIo oy Emily rlansor Shelton senior Caitlyn Ernst slams down a hit against Bellarmine Prep on Wednesday, Oct. 19 during the Lady Highclimbers' last game of the season. Climbers rack up offense, not points Final league game at Olympia on Friday By EMILY HANSON Despite racking up more than 400 yards in total of- fense, the Shelton High- climbers were only able to score once against Gig Har- bor on Thursday, Oct. 20. At the league meet, the boys' team finished fifth out of seventh schools while the girls fin- ished seventh out of seven. "As far as the girls' team goes, I was pleased with them because the majority made person- al records and finished with their best races," Daryl White, head coach, said. Cody Williamson The junior varsity team finished in ninth place out of nine teams and White said he thought those runners improved every week. "The varsity boys had a tough day," White stated. "They're very disappointed." Only sophomore Cody Williamson finished fast enough to advance to the district meet. Williamson finished in ninth place with a time of 16:19.95, a personal record for him. White said junior Zach Taylor set a per- sonal record at 17:22.49 with his 28th place finish and that freshman Darius Burke also set a personal record with his 38th place finish and final time of 17:50.26 "I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Cody fin- ished in the top 20 at districts and made it to state," White said. "It's exciting to think what he could do in the future." White said the league meet was the best the boys' team has had in a while and added See Runners on page C-5 very pleased with the defen- sive effort." Offensively, the High- climbers brought home some impressive statistics. With 20 first downs, six more than Gig Harbor. and 78 total plays, 33 more than Gig Harbor, the Highclimb- ors rushed for 211 yards. Completing half of their passes, the Highclimbers also passed for 211 yards. However, the team was only able to score one time. with just 2:16 left in the game. The Highclimbers lost 42-6.
