lave van :alls. vice mm the am Sheriff’s Office asks for public’s consideration during auto gym: Sexleitner ’ kbox/eitner@masoncounty. com The Mason County Sheriffs Office ‘ has been busy in recent weeks. The weekend that started Oct. 16 kicked off with a spur-of-the-moment seizure of firearms and drugs and wrapped up with a rollover accident on a Forest Service road on Oct. 18, before a mere planned seizure of fire- arms and ammunition on Oct. 21. Deputy Matt Colbenson, public in- formation officer for the Sheriff’s Of- fice, described the Oct. 16 seizure of illegal firearms and drugs: “One of our deputies was patrol- ling Grapeview in the early morning hours when he saw a vehicle stopped in the middle of an intersection,” Col- benson said. “Naturally, he thought this was rather odd, and when he ap- proached to make contact, the vehicle sped off.” The vehicle pulled into a driveway and stopped. He fled, leaving behind a female passenger in the vehicle. A search warrant turned up two fire- accidents Police responded. ' “It’s no mystery what happened,” Colbenson said. “There were no drugs or alcohol involved. They were simply not exercising safe driving and go— ing too fast for the road conditions, when their vehicle caught the corner and flipped. But none of them were injured.” Oct. 21 marked another early morning visit to Grapeview by county law enforcement, this time as part ' of a multijurisdictional SWAT team serving a high-risk warrant. . Colbenson said the Sheriffs Office joined with the Shelton Police De- partment, the state Department of Fish and Wildlife, and county fire and EMS agencies to apprehend a suspect on charges of assault with a firearm and unlawful firearm possession. “A lot of times, SWAT teams get called out to respond to situations on the fly, but this time, they were able to plan ahead,” Colbenson said. “They made a great plan and executed it smoothly.” The suspect was taken into custody without incident or in- arms, $190 in cash, and a cache of juries, and detectives recovered sev- narcotics that included methamphet- amine, heroin and oxycontin. “They also had scales and several baggies that indicated an intent to distribute,” Colbenson said. That weekend closed out with a noninjury vehicular accident. Colbenson said a car with three teenagers rolled over on U.S. Forest Service Road 23, above Skokomish Valley. around 3!.3QP-m. on Oct. 1.8- The car was upside down but all three teens were able to extricate themselves. The Mason County Sheriff’s Office was joined by members of West Ma- son Fire and the Skokomish Tribal eral loaded firearms and what they deemed “a significant amount” of am- munition. Two days earlier, the Sheriffs Of- fice had posted an unrelated request on social media asking people not to post images from major accidents on their own accounts out of consider- ation for family members of those in- volved in injuries or fatalities so that next of kin can be notified first. “We’re not looking to preclude any- one’s freedom of speech,” Colbenson said. “We’re just asking folks t6 be tasteful and respectful to those loved ones who might need to grieve or be notified” One injured in SR3 wreck Staff report news@masoncounty. com A three-truck wreck on state Route 3 at 3:41 pm. on Oct. 23 left one pas- ' senger injured, all three cars dam- aged, but all three drivers unharmed.
