3‘ ‘ I ‘ .. 9 . KIDS MESSAGE by Theresa Murray theresa@masoncounty.com “Jesus answered them, ‘Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners to repent.’ Luke 5:31—32 NLT Do you know what it means to repent? We have been talking about John the Baptist, and how he preached, “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near. ” Matthew 3:2 But what IS repentance? Is it the same as forgiveness? ’ Has someone ever done something to you that hurts your feelings, and they say “I’m sorry, do you forgive me?” If you forgive them, and they hurt you again, how does that make you feel? When we sin, it hurts Jesus. If we say I’m sorry, He will forgive us—over and over, as many times as we ask— but, if we still keep sinning, we have not really repented. ' To repent means to turn away from sin and turn to God. And, sure, other sins will pop up that we will have to ask forgiveness for, and repent of them also, but we are acknowledging that we are sick and we need Jesus to help us NOT sin! We CAN’T do it by ourselves! God says His thoughts are not our thoughts, and His ways are higher than our ways. Isaiah 55:9 In Luke 18:9—14, Jesus told this story to some who had great confidence in their own righteousness and sand EPISCOPAL CHURCH ‘4»SUNDAY SERVICES Join Us for Online Worship at 10:30 a.m. Go to wwwsdow. org for live streaming information. 360-426-8472 324 W. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself, and prayed this prayer: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not like other people—cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I’m certainly not like that tax collector! I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.’ But the tax collector stood at a distance, and dared not even lift his eyes to Heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘0 God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’ Jesus said, ‘I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.’ “ What kind of prayer did the Pharisee pray? That’s right! He thanked God that he wasn’t a sinner. He thought he was better than everybody else, and he was not sorry for anything he had done. The tax collector did not repent in this parable, but he knew he needed Jesus to help him. He knew he was in need of mercy and grace. He acknowledged that he was a sinner. The Pharisee did not see himself as a sinner. Jesus did not come to call those who thought they were righteous to repent—He came to those who knew they were sinners! Romans 3:23 says we ALL sin and fall short of the glory of God. That means every one of us! Your sin may be different than someone else’s, but we all sin, and God doesn’t say one sin is better than another. In fact, He says if we break one commandment, we are guilty of breaking them all! That’s why He had to send Jesus to us, so Jesus is our Lord, our Savior, our Friend, and our Lawyer. Yep, that's right! He is our lawyer when the Devil wants to accuse us. He tries to point out all our weaknesses, and Jesus says, “Yeah but they know they are struggling 'with this. They pray to Me to help them be strong!" Jesus is actually very glad when we repent. He knows we want to be like Him, and He likes when we ask Him to help us do good things. Remember that, when you ever struggle with things. You know right from wrong! You know when you do something that you need to say you're sorry for. We all just have to pray and ask Jesus to help us not do those things! Remember, He will ALWAYS forgive us, but repentance means we ask Him to help us not do them again. Jesus is the BEST doctor!! He can make us well! Will Preach for Food ' Podcast wwwtaithsheltonorg 1212 Connection Street, Shelton - 360.428.8611 Rev.
