County Residents Owners Of Some Rare Dog Breeds
VIZSLAThis male golden Vizsla, Prince Yakima, is believed to
be one of three of the breed in Mason County. He =s owned
by Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Ziegler, Shelton, Dr. B. E. Potts, Belfair,
owns a parr of the hunting dogs. While the breed is said to be
one of the oldest of the short haired pointing and retrieving dogs
from Europe, it has only in t;le past 10 years or so been in the
United States. For many years, Hungarian officials, where the
dog was developed, decreed that it could not be bred outside of
Hungary. After a dog-napping got the first of the breed to
the U.S., it began its development here. Hungary now allows
a limited amount of exports.
BULLTERRIER--This female Bullterrier is owned by Jack Gray,
Spencer Lake, and is named Frisco Folly of Monty-Ayr. The
Bullterrier was developed in the 1850s as a fighting dog in Eng-
land and was origma;iy a cross between the Bulldog and either the
now-extinct English White Terrier or the Black and Tan Terrier.
The breed is divided into two varieties, white and colored. Frisco
Folly is of the colored variety as are the three pups Gray has
from a litter born last spring. The breed has been known in the
U.S. for many years and between 1895 and 1915 was among-the-
top ten breeds in numbers registered with the American Kennel
Club.

AUSTRALIAN TERRIERSAnother relatively new breed in the
United States from "down under" is the Australian Terrier. Pic-
tured here are Embar's Where's Charley, held by Steven Ford,
left, and Tammil<in's Jenny Wren, held by Liana Ford. The dogs
are owned by Mr. and Mrs. Alan H. Ford. The breed was developed
.in Australia by settlers from the British Isles who brought some
of their terriers when they went to the new land, Like many
other terriers, the breed has a harsh outer coat and a soft under
coat. It stands about 10 inches high and weighs about 12 to 14
pounds. It was first imported to the United States about 25 years
ago, and received official recognition by the American Kennel Club
in 1960. The breed began to appear on the West Coast in the
past few years.
AUSTRALIAN CATTLE DOGMA relatively new breed to the
United States is the Australian Cattle Dog, sometimes called the
Australian Blue Heeler or the Australian Heeler. This female
pup, about 3Va months old, is owned by Mr .and Mrs. Melvin
Newman and is being held in the picture by their grandson, Bobby
Crt, me. The pun was imported from Australia when it was about
six weeks old, arriving in California with some others imported
by a breeder there. The breed was developed by the Australian
settlers by" crossing their cattle dogs, brought from the British
Isles, with the Dingo, or wild dog of Australia, the first cross
being a merle collie. The purpose of crossing in the wild
dog was to give the animals stamina to be able to work in the
brush country. Later the Kelpie, another Australian herd dog,
and the Dalmation were introduced into the breed. The resutt is
