Proper meal planning is essenlial to living well
with diabetes, and those with the condition can
greatly increase their health and lifestyle by learning
some "Practical Tools for Menu Planning," which
will be the topic of the next Mason General Hospital
Shelton Diabetes Support Group meeting to be held
on Thursday, November 15 from 1 to 2 p.m. Due
to ongoing Hospital construction, the sessions are
still being held in the new PUD Conference Room
at.2621 E John's Prairie Road, located near Mason
General, 2.2 miles from N 13th Street. Entrance and
parking is on the left side of the building. Sarah
Fulkerson, RD, and certified diabetes educator for
MGH&FC, will be on hand to share a variety of practi-
cal tools to assist in menu planning and diet. man-
agement for those with diabetes, and their family
support members. Time will also be set aside for
questions and answers.The Shelton Diabetes Sup-
port Group, affiliated with the American Diabetes
Association, meets at the Hospital every third Thurs-
day of the month from September to June. It is free
and open to people with type 1 and 2 diabetes, their
friends, and family. For more information call Sue

(360) 275-8614, and ask for the Diabetes Wellness
Center).
December is a month filled with giving, and you
can give the gift of"saving a life" by attending Ma-
son General Hospital & Family of Clinics' next FREE
Adult, Child, and Infant Basic Life Support CPR
class to be held on Thursday, December 13 from 6 to
9 p.m. at MGH&FC's Learning Center, located next to
McDonald's on Olympic Highway North. Class size is
limited and spaces fill up fast on a first-come, first-
served basis. Participants are advised to pre..register
early and before December 3 by calling the Learning
Center at (360) 427-3609. This is nora First Aid class.
MGH&FC's next 2-day "Living Well With Diobe-
tes"class is scheduled forTuesday and Wednesday,
December 4 and 5 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the
Skokomish and Washington Rooms at the Hospital.
MGH&FC's team of professionals who teach the class
will cover tile diagnosis and treatment of diabetes
its medications, proper meal planning, exercise,
prevention and treatment of complications, stress
management, living well, and engaging support
people and a healthcare team. The prevention of
serious complications of diabetes and the promo-
tion of good general health are the goals of effective
self-management, and the aim of the class. Family
members/significant others are also invited to attend
the class, as they can be a great source of support
to those with diabetes. Due to li,mited space, ad-
vanced registration for the class is required, so make
your reservation early by calling Sue Barwick, R.N.,
C.D.E., at (360) 426-1611, ext. 33@1 (from Allyn (360)
275-8614, ext. 3301). Diabetes education is a covered
service under most insurance plans.
