NEWS BRIEFS Fire district commissions to meet Thursday A special joint board of commis- sioners meeting for Mason County fire districts 6 and 11, as well as Central Mason Fire & EMS, will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Mason County PUD 3 building, 2621 E.John Prairie Road in Shelton. The public is invited to attend the meeting, during which staff will re- view an inter-local agreement involv- ing the organizations and possibly adopt the agreement. Mason unem County drops in Sept. According to a report issued by the Washington State Employment Security Department last week, the unemployment rate fell to 8 percent in Mason County in the month of Sep- tember. That's a drop of 0.3 .percentage points from revised numbers for Au- gust in the county, but still higher than that unemployment rate of 7.3 percent for September 2015. With the addition of 20,000 jobs during the month, the unemployment rate dipped to 5.6 percent from 5.7 percent in the state. Mason County continues to lag behind the major- ity of its neighbors when it comes to unemployment. Pierce (6.0 percent), Lewis (7.7), Thurston (5.7) and Kitsap (5.7) counties all boasted lower un- employment rates than that of Mason County. Of its neighbors, only Grays Harbor County (8.2) had a greater rate of unemployment than Mason County. For current information on benefits available from the county., state and federal resources, go to Masoncountyveterans.com Volunteers needed for fisheries group Members of the local sport fishing community are encouraged to apply to volunteer with the Puget Sound Rec- reational Fisheries Enhancement pro- gram's 10-member oversight committee. According to an Oct. 26 news release issued by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, 10 volunteers will be appointed to serve a two-year term that runs from Janu- ary to December 2018 and will meet several times a year to review projects and provide guidance on funding ac- tivities. To qualify, applicants should be closely linked to the recreational fish- ing community and have an under- standing of salmon and bottomfish fisheries in Puget Sound. PUD 1 to hold special meeting The Mason County PUD I board of commissioners will hold a special meeting at 10 a.m. Nov. 10 as a work- shop on the Union Water System Fea- sibility Study.
