HARSTINE ISLAND NEWS
The rain has found our
island. Wet sloshes up
through the soles of
my shoes, wrinkles my toes
and chills my knees to shak-
ing. As a kid growing
up in Parkland, this
was a winter expecta-
tion. I still remember
the backyard football
games played on a field
of mud. We tackled,
chased, and laughed
for hours. If we were
cold, I don't really By MIKIE
know, I just remember CALLAGHAN
laughing when tack-
led and my face was
smashed into the crispy-cool
soft mud. These days, Judy
and I have the fire going, the
drinks hot and the thought of
splashing through mud pud-
dles - well, I still kind of enjoy
it - Judy, not so much.
A legal bulletin recently
came through our office in
regards to wells. Since so
many of us have our own pri-
vate wells here on the island
I thought this would be of
interest. The State Supreme
Court's decision doesn't affect
wells that are already in use,
but it could affect wells that
are new and not in operation
yet, or wells that haven't been
used for a period of
time. All new single
private wells will
have to be evalu-
ated to see if they
impact ground water
and instream flow
levels. This new law
went into effect Nov.
1. So, if you own
acreage and you are
planning on build-
ing, this is something
you need to look at now. And
if you are planning to buy va-
cant land for a future project,
make sure it has legal and
abundant water rights grant-
ed to the property.
INQUIRING MINDS WANT
YOUR HELP
Inquiring Minds, Harstine
Island Community Club's pop-
ular winter speaker program,
is making plans for the 2017
series. Your help is needed.
This means we want you to go
to Humanities.org and click on
"Speakers Bureau," and select
three picks you think would
be most interesting. You
can then email or call Arlen,
(arlt'nn2@q.com or 43,2-9712)
with your choices. Invite your
friends and neighbors to do
the same. While Inquiring
Minds brings visitors from all
over the area, the speakersare
only chosen by vote of commu-
nity club members. This vote
will take place at the Nov. 11
meeting. The absolute dead-
line for nominations is Nov. 5.
Speakers are sponsored by
Humanities Washington, free
to any nonprofit in the state.
The new roster has more
challenging and interesting
choices than ever before. This
yea s Inquiring Minds nomi-
nation process will be a little
more stressful as the roster
came out late and with Octo-
berfest in the mix, we need
to get picks in and booked
quickly. Mary Jane (MJ) Rob-
bins will be stepping in to be
chairperson. We are so lucky.
She already has a fine com-
mittee ready to produce the
series as well.
BRING YOUR WREATH-
MAKING SKILLS
As mentioned last week,
the Harstine Island Farm-
ers Market will be indoors
from 10 a.m. until noon on
Nov. 5. Also, the garden club
will not have a meeting in
November. It will be sponsor-
ing a wreath-making class
on Nov. 19 at the hall. This
class will run from 10 a.m.
until 2 p.m. The cost will
be $20. That will include
lunch and materials for the
wreaths. If you have special
boughs or decorations you
want to put on, please bring
them.
ARE YOU READY
FOR LUNCH?
The LaJune Senior Lunch
will open its doors Nov. 9. It
will be serving roast beef,
mashed potatoes and gravy,
green beans, with pickled beets
and cook's choice cake. This
will be the only lunch served
this month. Those doors at the
community club open a little
before noon and the chow bell
rings right at noon. All that is
asked is a $5 donation. All who
live in the Pioneer School dis-
trict who are age 50 and older
and their guests are invited.
OCTOBERFEST
A LITTLE LATE
Let's remember the Nov.
11 community club meeting-
it's a big one. Because of the
power outage, the Octoberfest
celebration had to be canceled
and the whole event will take
place at the November meet-
ing. The food will be the same,
the awards will be the same,
just a month later. Also, the
club will be voting on the
new slate of officers for next
year. If you have any desire
at all to jump into the action,
nominations from the floor
will still be open at voting
time.
