Jeepers finds a new home
This is the story of Jeepers,
who was Lookin' for a Home.
It is with mixed emotions
that I photograph the
unfortunate dogs and cats who
pose each week for this Journal
feature. My heart aches for the
plight of these unwanted
creatures; hope, however, springs
eternal and I am pleased to have
a part in the possible adoption
of these pets.
For two years I have
searched in vain for an Old
English Sheepdog to replace a
beloved pet lost by my Number
Two Son and his family. Several
weeks ago I fell in love with the
shaggy little mutt who was up
for grabs and waiting for my
came ra.
A few queries determined
that the little fellow was
housebroken and fond of small
children. I telephoned my
Number Two Son.
"I've found a dog for you!"
I said happily. "He'll be just
perfect!"
"An Old English Sheepdog?"
Number Two Son asked eagerly.
"Well... no."
"Oh." Deflation.
"But he looks like a
sheepdog!"
"Oh2" Renewed interest.
"Big and sturdy like an Old
English Sheepdog?"
"Not exactly. One might call
him a Modern Contemporary
Miniature New English
Sheepdog."
"Never heard of the breed."
Suspicion.
"You'll have to see him to
appreciate him," I assured
Number Two Son." He's',grey
and white and shaggy with hair
all over his face. Just like an Old
English Sheepdog only smaller.
Loads of personality."
"Sounds okay." Reluctant
approval.
"You must decide right
away. Once his picture appears
in the paper he'll be snapped up
in a hurry. He's a real charmer."
"Well . .. " Lingering
indecision.
"Tell you what. The owner is
right here beside me. How would
it be if she brings him out to
your place so that you can see
him'?."
"Fine!"
"There's just one small thing.
This dog has a stiff left hind leg.
He can't sit properly and he
can't really run around all that
good, either."
"So?"
Love flourished at first sight
between Jeepers and his new
family. He romps with the older
children, cuddles with the babies,
behaves with decorum around
the adults and quietly joins the
family circle at the time of
evening prayer.
"I think it's great," I said to
Number Two Son, "that this
Miniature New English Sheepdog
has found a home in spite of his
infirmity."
"And why not?" came the
answer. "We don't love either
animals or people because of
good looks and physical
perfection.
"After all, we let you move
onto our property, too."
