Highclimb r boys re di tri t ham I CLIMBER SENIOR Bill Boggs leads a tightly packed group at about the one-mile mark of Saturday's three-miler at Stan Hedwall Park in Chehalis. t I II @ ACTION MIDWAY through the girls' race ees Climbers Shelly Trucksess (228) and Debbie Bostrom moving up en route to eventual respective 23rd- and 29th-place finishes. Girls' gutsy effort earns state berth, as It was hard to make them out through the mist of breathlessness fogging the finish-line area Saturday in Chehalis, but triumphant smiles were very much in evidence in the Highclimber cross-country camp. And the official results hadn't even been tallied -much less posted. "That was the best you guys have ever run as a team," bubbled Climber Coach Pete Janda, bustling around with hugs and handshakes for his young runners. The cause for jubilation indeed proved justified, too, for the good news race officials soon had was that the Highclimbers not only had won the district boys' title with a decisive victory over subdistrict champ Capital and ten other schools but also had earned a second team berth in next Saturday's state meet. The SHS girls' fourth-place finish guaranteed that both varsity squads will compete in the grand finale - and it was that distaff performance that had Janda particularly excited. "Hey, our guys have been right up there all year," he said. "They finished fifth last week in subdistrict, but that was without their number-two runner, Steve Robinson. They did run a super race Saturday, but the fact that they won it didn't surprise me at all. "The girls getting fourth, though - that really surprised me. They' just really put it all together as a team." Even if they had not qualified team-wise, the Climbers would have sent two of their ranks as individual state competitors. Both junior Jeff Likes and senior Frances Nelson were fourth overall in their respective divisions - and the top four advance automatically. Both efforts were astounding, in view of the fact that last week in subdistrict Jeff had finished eighth while Frances was 15th, ,btt:.£0 ' ::enior.Nelson' te accomphshment haa to be doubly gratifying. A state competitor when she Making a particularly impressive showing in a last-minute role was Climber freshman Shawn Buechel. Pressed into the varsity lineup last week when varsity regular Rob Whitten took ill, Shawn responded with a fine 46th-place showing Saturday. The performance earned him a letter - "something we don't award a freshman but once in a blue moon," noted Janda. Buechel is expected to be on the spot again this week at state, unless junior Whitten can make a dramatic recovery. All in all, Janda figures his was a freshman and again as a sophomore, she had suffered from nagging injuries and the generally burgeoning ranks of top-quality female competitors the last two and, with shin splints flaring up just last week, Frances faced the growing possibility of another late-season disappointment. But it was not to be. Ignoring the patti in her shin, she surged out with the lead pack right from the start and poured it on throughout the two-mile test. Sophomore teammate Paula Mueller was second among the Climber girls, finishing ninth overall. Shelly Trueksess and Debbie Bostrom ran their best races of the year to finish 23rd and 29th, respectively, while teammates Pat Eichinger, Sally Cross and Jill Patnode rounded out the Climber field with standout efforts. If team bunching was vaguely apparent in the Climber girls' performance, it was startingly obvious in the boys' race. Steve Robinson, recovered from the foot tendonitis that had sidelined him the week before, finished ninth overall in 17:37, just 18 seconds slower than teammate Likes over the three-mile Stan Hedwall Park course. Dale Johnson and Bill Boggs were less than 20 seconds off the heels of Robinson, finishing 15th and 18th, respectively, and Climbers Steve Peterson and Lloyd Gorman were 35th and 38th. boys, especially, have a realistic shot at finishing in the top four this Saturday at state. His team of two years ago took fifth overall, led by the Johnson Twins, Dan and Dave, and Janda likes the comparison. "Really, with Jeff, Steve, Dale and Bill running the way they have been," he says, "we've probably got more depth than we had that year." As for his girls' chances, Janda confesses they are slim. "But I figured their chances at district were slim, too," he adds, "and look what they did. "They're just going to have to run their hearts out again." Saturday's state championships will be held at their traditional site at Evergreen High School in south Seattle beginning 10 a.m. this Saturday. Last year the Climber boys finished ninth overall -better than any other school in their district.
