The Mason Transit Authority (MTA) re-
vealed a balanced budget Tuesday, which in-
cludes plans to buy eight new vehicles by 2013.
City commissioner and MTA board mem-
ber Mike Byrne expressed concern that the
almost $10 million budget was balanced us-
ing more than $1 million from the authority's
ending fund balance.
"One of the concerns I had was using the
reserves, ending fund to balance the budget
... you're heading down a dicey road," he said.
"I would like to see under 2012 goals.., a com-
mitment to rebuild the reserves to an accept-
able level. We need to get some sustainability
along the line."
The budget also includes increases in the
cost of employee health insurance and 2.5
percent step increases for some employees.
"Looking at what the city and county and
others are facing it's very generous," said
county commissioner and MTA board mem-
ber Tim Sheldon.
MTA plans to buy a 35-foot motor coach
and seven minibuses with funds from the
2012 budget.
The authority did not raise fares this 3
but is still considering the option, along

The budget also includes $2.6 millior
improvements to the Transit Commu
Center in downtown Shelton. Other t
that, the budget will keep service at the

Brad Patterson as the authoritys new:
eral manager, replacing Dave O'Connell'
