Page A-6 - Shelton-Mason County Journal - Thursday, Nov. 10, 2016 Funding main concern for commission By GORDON WEEKS gordon@masoncoun com The former Simpson Lumber Co. roundhouse is at the crossroads. Simpson has offered to sell the City of Shelton its roundhouse property on the Shelton waterfront and about two miles of railroad line within the city limits. At the Shelton City Commission meeting on Mon- day, City Administrator Ryan Wheaton asked the commissioners to offer their opinion on five options: • Buy the roundhouse and railroad and construct a museum projected to cost $28 million. • Buy the roundhouse and railroad, and then mothball the roundhouse and remove an electrical substation at a cost of $450,000. • Decline the roundhouse and obtain the railroad to explore rail business. • Decline the roundhouse, and buy the railroad to convert the railroad to a trail. • Decline both the roundhouse and the railroad. Commissioners Kathy McDowell and Gary Cronce, the mayor, both said the city should pass on the roundhouse, but obtain the railroad to explore rail business or convert it into a trail. "I would love to support the whole thing .... unfor- tunately, with the financial situation today, we have • spent more than we have for a long time," Cronce said. The roundhouse comes with too many physical and financial challenges, Cronce said. "Unfortunately, I can't see us taking the round- house .... We don't have access and we don't own it," he said. McDowell said she agreed. "It would take a long time in tourism to make $28 million," she said. Commissioner Tracy Moore has championed a mu- seum at the roundhouse for years. "I know it can be done," she said. Moore said the city should consider the rail line as an asset that can be used for economic development. "I really hope we can look at the potential and grab at that ..... " she said. Moore asked the other commissioners to postpone a decision until other options are considered. They agreed to explore those options in two weeks. Cronce said he is open to a millionaire stepping forward to fund the project. During public comments, five train enthusiasts stepped up to the microphone to express support for turning the roundhouse into a museum. They point- ed out that there are only two in the state, with the other one in Seattle. Two of the speakers said the $28 million estimate for the museum is inflated. www.sheltoncinemas.com 517 Franklin St.- 426-1000 Sh0wtimes for Nov 11th" 17TM DEEPWATER HomzoN Fri - Wed 4:20, 6:45 Additional Shows Sat - Sun 2:00 Fri - Sat 9:00 SPECIAL PREVIEW I FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FiND THEM THURSDAY, NOV. 17 • 6:30 P.M.
