Alauna Carstens finished third to lead the Shel-
ton girls to an‘eighth~place finish as a team in the
state 2A girls cross country race at Sun Willows Golf
Course in Pasco on Saturday. . ,
Carstens finished the race in 18 minutes, 36 sec-
onds. Anacortes Jessica Frydenlund won the indi-
vidual title with a time of 17:58. '
“Alauna is emerging as one of the top runners in
Washington,” Shelton coach John Johnson wrote in
an email to the Journal. “Third place at state is the
highest finish ever for a Shelton girl. She has always
raced well at the big competitions and state was no
exception. She started intelligently and found a way
to close two pretty big gaps and lean for third place
at the line. It was a big day for Alauna and we are
all very happy for her.”
Senior Ali Clifton earned 27th place with a time
of 20:18 and 'sophomore Lily Bennett finished 83rd
with a time of 21:58. i
Faith Linthicum placed 100th with a time of
22:15 and Koralea Roessler rounded out Shelton’s
finishers with a time of 22:37 to take 115th place.
“A top 10 team finish for our girls is an absolutely
wonderful result,” Johnson said. “Each and every
one of our five girls had to be focused and race with
a great deal of courage and that’s exactly what they
, did.” ,
Sehome won the girls team state title.
In the boys race, Shelton finished 16th as a
team, with junior Jacob Miller earning 72nd place
to lead the Highclimbers with a time of 17:44. Jay-
don Blackburn earned 97th place with a time of
18:09 and Carson Bursch placed 101st with a time
of 18:12.’ ,
Noah Miller took 140th place in 18:54, Kaden
Pearson earned 154th place with a time of 19:28 and
Jack Parker finished 157th in 19:45. Landon Bursch
ended the race in 165th place in 20:33.
“The guys gained valuable experience at state,”
Johnson said. “With six of eight varsity athletes
returning, there is some motivation and optimism
among the team. Looking back a year ago, .COVI'D
took a toll on the guys team when our top three re-
turners did not rejoin the team. That left us with .a
'young but enthusiastic group that finished last in
the league in the winter cross country season. To
end the season at state is a huge step forward. To a
man, we are eXcited to move forward and see what
' is next.”
Selah senior Cooper Quigley won the 2A boys in-
dividual championship with a time of 15:38. Squali-
cum won the team state title.
Shelton is losing four senior girls and two senior
boys, but Johnson is hopeful for the 2022 cross coun-
try season, as well as track season.
