XC: Thygesen leads Bulldogs in first state meet since ’99
from page A—
“We lose four senior girls
and two senior guysand they
were obviously a huge part of
this seasons success,” John—
son Said. “It’s niceto reflect
on that for a short time. Soon
enough, we will be think-
ing about next season and
rebuilding the girls team
around Lily Bennett. We have
our work cut out there; we
struggle with participation
numbers generally in Shelton,
and specifically in cross coun-
try running.”
The North Mason girls fin- ’
ished 16th as a team, with
Kezlie Thygesen leading the
Bulldogs in 28th place with a
time of 20:20. Sophomore Cali
Dupont finished 125th with a
time of 22:59 and senior Airi—
lyn McDonald took 133rd with
a time of 23:19.
“The team as a whole ran
well. They ran competitively
and worked hard together,”
North Mason coach Miranda
Thygesen wrote to the Jour-
nal in an email. “Paige, Alexis
and Emma ran lifetime PRs
(personal records). Kezlie is
such an even runner. She ran
hard and finished better than
predicted. Kezlie also ran at
state her freshman season.
She is an excellent and hum-
ble leader for NMHS.”
Paige Kelly placed 138th
with a time of 23:31, Averie
Dupont finished 140th with
a time of 23:34 and Alexis
Antonowicz took 150th with

placed 152nd for the Bulldogs
in 28:07.
“It’s a fun group of girls and
they were extremely excited
to be the first team in 22 years
to qualify for the state meet,”
Thygesen said. “We went over
Friday after a fantastic send
off from the NMHS band, staff
and student body followed
up by Stan Yantis and his
Hawkins band. It was pretty
special. After a stop for break-
fast, we were off to run a pre-
view of the course at Sun Wil-
lows in Pasco. While there, we
talked over our race strategy
and the girls felt good about
the competition ahead on Sat—
urday. We went out for pas-
ta dinner and came back to
the hotel for card games and
painted nails. I am confident

this was a weekend the girls will all remember.”
Mary M. Knight football season ends due to COVID
By MattEaide

The Mary M. Knight football team
was scheduled to play Lake Quinault
on Nov. 6 in Matlock in the semifinals
of the 6-man 1B football playoffs, but
COVID-19 cases among the team
forced the Owls to forfeit.
“COVID happened. We had a cou-
ple positive cases within our program
within a span of three days leading
up to the game,” Mary M. Knight
coach Thomas Kerr told the Jour-
nal. “Two cases are a quarter of my
football team. and there were close
contacts because they hang out with
each other.”
Kerr said he is frustrated with
how the season ended for the team
and players, which confirmed anoth-
er positive case Saturday morning.
Despite how ‘the season ended,
Kerr is proud of how his team pro-
. gressed throughout the season.
“Seniors Tristin Murray, Ryan
Good, Quinnton Krippelcz, Danny
Goeders,’ they carried most 'of the
weight,” Kerr said. “To see the group
of younger guys come from where they
were, not playing a down of football
to where they are now, made quite

a jump over the last two and a half
months. The seniors who have been
with me since their seventh-grade
year, to see where they’ve grown, to
put the product they put on the field
has been good to see. I feel for them
about how it ended, it sucks, we had
a legitimate shot at making a run at
playoffs. With last year, how things
went, it sucks for the group and our
football program that this happened
at this time.”
Mary M. Knight finished the season
4-2 and in second-place in the 6-man
Coastal League. Lake Quinault will
